Hi all,

Long story short: Wootware told me the cpu should work with the motherboard out of the box. It doesn't. Boot cycles. Tried different ram and a different 3rd gen CPU, same results.

So i'd just like someone to help a brother out by letting me use their 2nd gen ryzen to update the bios
I stay in the southern suburbs of cape town

Asrock b450 fatality itx
Ryzen 3700x
2 x 16gb 3200 CL 16

Hi. Try and take your CMOS battery out and reset BIOS that way. Some boards are just very fussy with certain ram.
Usually if BIOS isn't compatible with the CPU ,the screen will just stay black but it won't boot cycle .

Can't you just update the bios via 'Instant flash'?
It's not getting into the bios on both cpus, i think you need a working cpu to get into the bios at least

Thanks, tried this just now, same results :(

Damn you! Were you the last one to steal that motherboard at R2049? :(

Disclaimer : I am not experienced in building but I recently built using this mobo and a ryzen 3200g. At first the screen was completely black but my ram sticks weren't seated properly in place - after this, would get signal to monitor but couldn't get into the bios ( was stuck on asrock pre-bios screen).

Tried different things including a wired keyboard. Then thought it might be the ram so tried messing around there (tried single stick--didn't have other ram to check) but eventually after asking a friend- I needed to remove the hard drive (it was an m.2) then was able to get into the bios.

From here (no hard drive connected at all) - updated to latest bios version from asrock website via USB. Don't try get max speed out of ram yet-just let it do its thing on auto (I think it's at 2133 mhz) until OS is installed.

3. Could now recognize hard drive and booting into bios no problem.

All of the best!

@Petester You're right, it's not boot cycling. I changed the ram, cleared cmos and removed the m.2 @dazzy

It boots, fans ramp up then it slows down and just sits there. No loop
Guess it's time for a bios update

Forgive the silly question, but are you using a gfx card with the build since the cpu doesn't have a igpu?

Not a silly question at all, at first I booted without a gpu but it has the same behaviour with a gpu

I've had a lot of BIOS issues with Asrock B450 boards even with a compatible or latest BIOS.
Never had that board but the B450M HDV, B450 Pro 4 boards sometimes gave me similar issues. Was quite random from board to board.
Would work with 1st/2nd gen but some just didn't work with certain 3rd Gen even with latest BIOS.
I had 2 Asrock boards that after updating with a 2nd gen to 3rd gen BIOS didn't work with the 3rd Gen and then you couldn't flash it back to the older BIOS and the 2nd Gen didn't work either. So the board was unusable.

So Asrock on some of their B450 boards have definitely got some BIOS issues which they haven't resolved and don't seem to be making them public either. Have a feeling that's why Corex, the supplier stopped selling both boards.

Have tried a couple of Asrock Steel Legends boards and they seemed fine though.
Very frustrating problem but hope in your case it's just a simple BIOS update required.

This is really invaluable information. Thank you Peter. Im waiting on a shipment for a Ryzen 1600af and an Asrock B450 Steel Legend MATX board with 3200mhz GSkill ram. Lord help me if there are compability issues

You should be fine.
Well it's not only Asrock. The BIOS size problem on many B450 boards causes these issues.
Really the B550 should have come out at a similar time to the X570 and been priced properly but in my opinion, AMD are just as bad as Intel with some of their decision making.
Yes the M/B vendors need to take responsibility for ensuring their BIOS updates work properly and are stable, but it's ridiculous that B550 has come out a year after 3rd gen release
