Hi All

So I am hoping someone can give me some kind of advise for a client.
The client has a server onsite, which is used to host shared documents as well as QuickBooks company files.

Now the client wants to be able to setup like a virtual machine on the server (with a windows 10 desktop OS)
So that if something happens a handful of staff can access the network via remote desktop and work on QuickBooks.
Unfortunately a VPN won't work as the size of the QuickBooks company files are so large that internet bandwidth will be completely destroyed.

Or would something like a Proxmox with virtual machines be a better bet?

Thanks in advance.

Me thinks this needs bit more clarity... Is the current QuickBooks setup such that there are (big) files shared on the server, and several workstations running the QuickBooks app and accessing the (big) files over the LAN?

Now, you would like to enable the guys to access the (big) files by remoting from home?

So, if the QuickBooks app is installed on the server itself, and you enable Remote Desktop via VPN - shouldn't be a problem, as the (big) QuickBooks files never leave the server...
Or am I missing the point?

Sorry for this, but yes the Quickbooks files are stored on the server, and accessed over the LAN.
Does remote desktop via vpn work on Windows Server Essentials 2012?

Thank you so much for your response

How many vm's do you want to host on that server? And does it have the resourcse to do so?

What is their current bandwidth? what kind of firewall are they running?

Not sure, but many ways to get around it if it doesn't.
As you mentioned, you could host a VM with Windows 10 Pro, and enable Remote Desktop on it.
Alternatively, you could put a spare box (or 2) with W10 Pro next to the server, connect the two via LAN and enable Remote Desktop on that box.

Alternatively, you could get a TeamViewer licence and install it directly on the server, and do away with VPN and Remote Desktop (+/- 200 euros a year, though)

Another solution (which I would NOT recommend if there is any chance of two people working on QuickBooks at the same time) is to sync the files with a cloud.
The user would then simply work on his/her local copy, and once out of the app, the files would sync back to the cloud (and replicate to the other sites, wherever the cloud app is installed).

Did you ever come right with this?
