Hello Fellow Carbies

Can anyone share advice on where to get some Nigerian Naira cash notes in Cape Town?
I have a business trip coming and I'd like to carry some local currency with me when I'm in Lagos.

Thank you.

The Bank.

For what its worth, I can't seem to find the option to order Nigerian Naira from FNB....
Only the popular currencies are available to be ordered.
=(

Are you looking for bribe money for when you stumble upon immigration / customs.

More to ensure I can at the very least, buy a bottle of water when I'm there.
And perhaps tip the guys at the hotel.
=)

Just finished chatting to a FNB Forex banker..... and I was told "We don't trade in Nigerian Naira"..... sigh.
The fuck FNB? The second biggest economy after us.

Maybe try forex exchange.

I’m pretty sure usd is used there as well. Maybe a safer option. Just don’t carry too much of any currency. I’ve heard horror stories about immigration. They take you into a room, disappear for a long time and then come back and ask you to pay. They open your bags and check everything and there’s nothing you can do.

That was a few years ago, hopefully it’s better now.

Best bet is probably to take dollars with and exchange in Nigeria for their local currency, either at the airport or the hotel you staying at…

Had the same issue with Std Bank when traveling to Kenya. They don't seem to hold anything but vanilla Forex.

Was there in April last year. Just take USD and exchange for Naira there. It's not worth the money its printed on, so any reasonable amount will end up being a big wad of cash. Lots of guys try to exchange just outside the airport but you are very likely to get scammed, just use the foreign exchange in the airport, even if the rates are shit.

Most hotels will arrange a black market currency exchange if needed, better rates but a bit sketchy, better rates for 100 dollar notes than other notes.

Thank you for this advice. Any chance I can buy Naira cash notes with my South African credit card in the airport after landing?

You might be able to withdraw money from an atm but don't know if you can buy naira from the exchange with a card. The foreign exchange that side does also take Rand, best to have at least some cash on hand when you are that side. Just remember to activate your card for international use on the app, at least that is necessary for my ABSA card.

It is quite corrupt that side and everyone from security to baggage handlers were asking me for money, so also best not to carry too much cash.

Yeah in Nairobi I could at least draw cash using my Std Bank card. Of course had to notify them before going. My biggest issue was my phone, relying on dodgy WiFi.

Travelex maybe

Most international airports will have foreign exchange brokers inside the airport where you can buy their local currency when you arrive and sell what's left when you leave

I've not dealt with Nigeria but we have sent guys to Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Zimbabwe with USD notes

Credit Cards are hit and miss depending on where you are

Just tried Travelex in Canal Walk and was told you can't get Nigerian currency outside the country.... So I guess only option is in the airport on arrival.
