Whatsapp denying access to number

A colleague mentioned that whatsapp was not allowing him to use a number as it had been blocked. How does that happen?

Then I was at a cellular store and a lady there was crying as she couldn't get access to all her business info (contacts etc) on whatsapp, maybe for a different reason (she didn't seem very tech savvy).

It got me wondering, is there a way to view the google drive backups without whatsapp if needed? Or does one have to export everything in order to keep a historical record?
I don't even know what I might want to save from whatsapp conversations, I just would like to know I can search through them if needed

Yes. WhatsApp messages are stored in SQLite database format and the DB is unencrypted. You can simply open the file with something like SQLite Browser
