Good day all.

After my last endevour ebout getting a router for my home fiber and hearing alot of opinions about what people say i should get i was quite curiuos to know what most people actualy have in there homes.

So I pose the question to you. What home oruter do you use and why.

Ill go first.

I am getting my Asus RT-AC86u sortly.
Reasons.
It supprts PPtP VPN server on the router.
Its has Gigibit network ports.
It has gread hardware to help with alot of lead and packets going throu it.
BIGGEST reason i went for it aswell is i love Asus.
And added to that it has alot of extra QoL features that i like that could help me one day.

Am using Tp-Link Deco M5 Mesh Wi-Fi System, works as router also.

Reason:
Want Wi-Fi through the house without physical wiring of access point.

TP Link Archer C5... Because I got it for free with my fiber connection...
tested both PPTP VPN and OpenVPN servers on it and it works great.
No idea what I would really use it for except lanning a few games with a friend during this whole lockdown BS...

Asus Router RT Series Routers ( Asus RT-AC86U as Main). Currently using it in a Mesh WiFi Setup (AsusMESH). Can do a whole lot, has plugins you can install. Running Asus Merlin WRT Firmware. Best Home Router I have used and won't change from it easily either.

Edgerouter X SFP with 2 Unifi APs. Don't have to replace everything when I upgrade. Also like the customizability. Also don't like these huge ass routers with aerials. The APs are hidden and the router is quite small

Ubiquiti Amplifi HD - Because it doesn't have ugly as shit aerials sticking out of it and still has great signal strength.

It also has a cool little screen and lights which is of no use to me, but hey, it has it.

Still waiting for my Asus RT-AC86U. And i have heard and read alot about teh merlin Firmware. Is it work it to install it on the asus routers?

Also what are the bigest changes it adds to the router? Any extra features?

Its like updating a firmware package, that simple. Still keeps all the features and UI as the original firmware, but then opens it up with a lot more functionality (A lot with SSH and menu options in SSH). Can add a USB drive to store plugins on it as well. Hell as a nifty trick I even have a speedtest page on my router UI which uses Speedtest.net as well. Its actually written from the original ASUS code. Asus Unofficially supports it.

I can't explain the features as their are a lot. Head over to the forums on SNBForums and check them out. Firmware is kept up to date still as well. One of the main reasons I got this router was for VPN and Wireguard support with speeds up to 200mbps on VPN (That was my line max speed). With my other routers I couldn't even hit 30mbps properly.

I have a rather extensive "home" network with about 17 access points.
Core router is a Mikrotik with CAPSMan managing all the AP's

Mikrotik is great if you know what you are doing, although their wireless stack isn't great

To everyone using Mikrotik's i also love them and have used them alot. The bigest perk with them for me is THE DUDE

Also a plus for your ruckus. I Also have a Ruckus R300 that i put in place of my Ubiquti AP-AC-LR. The ruckus gives me better range for my home automation devices on 2.4Ghz

pfSense in a VM as my router, a Dell 8 port POE switch and a Ubiquiti AC LR AP,

Knock on wood, this has been a really reliable setup for the last +-2 years, it gives be great flexibility to run whatever services I want and segment my network into VLANS.

I use a Tenda AC1200 that was supplied by the ISP, works fine, runs my 1000/100 line with no issues so far (Average speedtest.net results are 920mbps down and 104mbps up on cable). Signal is about the same as the Ubiquiti AC LR AP I used before. All the home automation devices run on the 2.4Ghz network throughout the property. Phones and 1 Android TV stick is on 5ghz. Rest of the network has been cabled an runs through a TP-Link unmanaged rackmount gigabit switch (unmanaged because its cheaper :) ) In total across wifi and cable there is about 21 connected devices and 0 issues so far from this router with wifi or routing capabilities.

In my opinion for what this router can do so far and the price it comes in at it is really great value for money. Will see how it goes as the network expands.

Seamless 3x Deco mesh. It works like a charm, no disconnecting issues in 250sqm family house. Coming from WiFi extenders to this

I wanted a really good router (for when I finally got fibre) & It looks epic.
it's so overkill for my needs as someone who lives alone.

Ubiquity USG with an AC-LR access point.
Reasons
- solid setup with good control and insight as to what's happening.
- easy vlan setup and control.
- separate router and AC, so router is neatly tucked away in a cabinet with all it's wires and access point it positioned perfectly to get maximum coverage with a single cable to it.
- modularity, will swap the access point to an LR 6 soon...more range.

Came from a hAP AC2 with Airties mesh to a USG and 3 Unifi APs

Preferred the granularity of the mikrotik but living the all in one management panel that the unifi gives
