Wanting to move to a small town. Thinking about Riebeek Valley (Kasteel, Ongegund, Riebeek Wes). Any thoughts/recommendations/advice?

Okay, so the wife and I are planning to move in the next few months. We've sold our flat in the Southern Suburbs of CT and looking to make a move to a smaller town. We both work remotely from home and are keen for a bit of that small-town life. The Riebeek valley seems like a good choice because of the proximity to CT. We can drive through easily enough for the day and still get back home without too much fuss. We've been there on three separate Saturdays viewing houses and there are lots of options. We'll be heading through tomorrow again.

Do any members know the area?

Thoughts on small-town living?

Is it even worth buying a property there?

We'll have the option to move to Scotland in approx 2 to 3 years, and while that's not something we've agreed on just yet (her family is there; mine is here) if we do decide to go over eventually, I don't want the process to be impacted negatively. So, is it even a good idea to buy again now (I'm no property genius and while I assume it's always a good investment, there may be pitfalls I'm not aware of)?

Any thoughts, advice or recommendations would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

I grew up in Moorreesburg about 25KM from there, back then it was a lovely town (15 Years ago) tiny but lovely and close to Cape Town, and the lovely West Coast, Langebaan ect.

I know its not answering too many of your questions but just seeing the name brings back so many awesome childhood memories. I am sure you and your wife will love it there.

Definitely not worth buying if you are moving in 3 years time.
Depending on the price of the house you are buying, between just buying and then selling 3 years later you could be in well over R100K just in transaction fees.

Just keep in mind for CUD purposes your shipping will likely go up a fair bit since you are now no longer a major center.

As for how worth it it is? Visit and see whether you have everything you might want near you? Talking about stuff like shops and any public facilities. And what's the net situation like?

I live in Durban and already feel that we don't get enough VS CPT and JHB/PTA so I could never handle living anywhere with even less infrastructure and shopping opportunities. But maybe all you want is a Spar nearby and a basic DSL connection.
