Dear fellow carbies,

Please help with a basic UPS requirement: I need a battery backup solution to power a Unifi Switch 8 PoE (60w).
  • The switch is powered by 48V power supply (usage: max 12W excl PoE ports)
  • It currently powers 3 x Unifi UAP-AC-LITE (24V 0.5A max 6.5W each)
  • I need it to run at least 2 hours (load shedding), ideally 4-6 hours.
  • I don't want to spend millions on a battery for a switch.
I can't find an off-the-shelf type of 48V UPS. There are tons of 12V UPS gadgets for routers, got a couple of those for ONT and what not. How do I do this for the 48V switch?

Can I build my own with something like a 48V battery charger and 4 x 12V alarm batteries in series? I can't find 48V batteries except those big ones for running a house on.

Or am I approaching this wrong?

So I am using one of the Gizzu DC UPS that has a PoE output. Whether it supports 802.3at or af or bt or god knows which standard, I can't confirm. But it does power my nanoHD which also requires 802.3af (basically, the nanoHD normally won't run on passive 24V, only 48V upward, but it does run off of this Gizzu DC UPS)

Take a look at it and see, maybe it will power your switch...

EDIT: Sorry, I see that switch is purely DC powered, I misread and thought you needed to power it via PoE.

Thanks for the suggestion, yes as you say it is DC powered only. Seems like a diy ups is the only way, hoping someone here has some more expertise on how to do that.

Maybe reach out to Wibox for a custom spec one

Might be cheaper than DIY

Alternatively, since the spec sheet says: 48V, 1.25A, you could probably use a micro ups with 4x 12V dc outputs and connect those in series with a dc out.

2 hours runtime will need something other than a traditional UPS, the stuff made by APC are only meant to power loads to shutdown. Longer runs will kill a UPS.

The DIY route is probably best, rather invest in Lithium, it'll last longer both in terms of life and runtime.

I made one for my complex cameras. Used a 12v lithium battery back with built in bms, a battery charger and a step up “boost” dc-dc converter. Pretty easy to make.

Basically this then replaces the 48v dc psu of the switch.

This sounds great! Do you perhaps have some details/links of the components you used?

Will check the details when I get home but the battery I got from electroman. It was 12.6v 11A or something like that. charger from Akita business solutions and the boost converter from communica.

Basically, wire it up and then check the output using a multimeter while adjusting the potentiometers. Nice thing is thst the output is stable even if input changes.

12W (Excluding PoE Output) Page 6 of the datasheet.

Ubi makes UPS for their devices.

Hi MrPrisoner

I found this site where they have a what I think you are looking for. It is the only 48V DC Mini UPS I have been able to find that has a 48v output. They also have some case studies which give different scenarios which I found interesting as it gives some real-world usage data.

Hope this helps.

Anyone use the power buddie?
this really what I've been looking for to power my small PoE switch, using a UPS at the moment which is cool but it's struggling with current load shedding, due to not being able to charge fast enough

Good evening Carbies,

We have noticed a lot of traffic being generated to our site originating from carbonite on the back of this post so we would firstly like to thank @giggsie for the referrals, @MrPrisoner for originating this post, as well as the carbonite community for their interest in what we have to offer.

As a result, we have decided to list on Carbonite as a reseller to provide support and answer any question the community may have. We have provided a number of case studies based on actual equipment tests at a few of our customer's sites. Should you still have any questions after reviewing these studies you are welcome to reach out to us on the forum or directly at support@tech-buddies.co.za where we will be more than happy to assist.

We have also been running a series of promotions over the past few months, so please feel free to check us out at Tech-Buddies

Hope to hear from you all soon.

Good evening Kylews,

It would have been nice to receive some feedback on this post to know how our products has been rated by those who have purchased from us based on this post.

However, to come back to your question, we do have 3 case studies posted on our site where the Power-Buddie 48V DC UPS has been used to provide backup power to different PoE switches. I have linked this page below for your convenance.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist with.

The Tech-Buddies Team :)
