Sooooo.

I have some extra cash to possible do some upgrades should it be necessary

Current system:

Intel i7 4770k @ 4.2ghz
MSI Z97 gaming 5
2 x 8gigs ddr3 1600 ram ( 16g in total )
2 x 500g WD SSDs
2 x 1tb 7200rpm HDD
1 x Founders 1080ti GTX
1 x Meccer 2560x1440p 144hz monitor
1 x Coolermaster 212+ cooler with one fan

So my question

Lately i have been playing alot of BFV and notice my FPS idles around 70 - 110 on certain maps, with mostly on ultra, and high ( i like it on these settings and dont want to drop quality down )

Now the other thing that bothers me is the fact my CPU runs 100%, and GPU around 70 - 90%, now in my mind that means the CPU is bottlenecking and not getting full potential of my GPU.

If that is correct, then it would be worthwhile to upgrade the CPU , Board and Ram to something more newer.

As with my monitor running that res and at 144hz, to get full benefit upgrade is the correct path correct?

Please advise, or am i too FPS conscious

I hate to say it but the 4770 even in overclocked K form, is getting a bit long in the tooth.
A platform upgrade would definitely be worthwhile if you can spare the dough.

Thing is, that chip is good.
Gets beaten only marginally by the 7700.
Whereas the i5 8600 goes about 20% better and then 8700 about 40% but then the 8700 is nogal 'n paar rand so don't know if it's worth the increase?
That being said, I moved from my 2500k to a 7700 to a 8600 and I'm happy where I'm at now.
Check what the cost difference vs performance difference is % wise and see if it makes sense?
Pointing out the obvious but cpu/mobo and ram will need to be changed.

May the CUD be with you

You can try some overclocking with some decent cooling for some more FPS, but depending on what you're playing I wouldn't put anything bigger than a 1080 with 4th gen

Wait out for Ryzen 3000 but yeah upgrade the cpu motherboard and ram. Intel probably only going to bring something around 3rd quarter

Remember he will be moving from ddr3 to ddr4 so that will help as well

I'm in the same boat. I've pushed my 4670k to its limits and can't get over 80 fps in bfV. Check out the upgrade kits on evetech. Looking at getting a 9400F myself once the funds are there.

Thanks for the advise gents.

I am leaning towards a 8700k/9700k with a Z390 board and ddr4 3000 ram currently.

Which i am sure will give a significant boost

This is Carbonite where the CUD is strong! Upgrade and get done with it 😜

Look at my rig. You need a better cooler to get 4.6Ghz, and you need 2133Mhz or ideally 2400Mhz RAM.

Google 2600k 1080 or 2600k 1080Ti , see the vids by Bitwit and HardwareCanuks. RAM is the main bottleneck. GPU sends FPS to CPU via RAM.

I went from my current rig to a 7700 non k and saw close to close to 0 improvement (OC'ed 1070ti). I think @JollyJamma did a similar upgrade and was disappointed, but I might be thinking of someone else. I HATE buyers remove which was strong post the 7700 upgrade.

nice setup
TIME FOR an UPGRADE
ddr3 Ram up to 2133mhz would you really see much of a difference
i think go 8th or 9th Gen i guess would be future proofing fora next few years.
3000mhz ram
240mm AIO

i dont think overclocking the 4th Gen will bring more performance
even with 240Rad or 360Rad

if you can test it go ahead.

This! ^ You will probably be disappointed....

Also, why are so many people stating that the DDR3 -> DDR4 will give you a noticeable boost? It really won't, unless you notice 1 or 2 fps. :D

Also also, bottleneck calculators are bs. It will give you a rough indication, but nothing accurate enough to select a component upgrade.

Agreed re bottleneck calculators. They're like those "8 balls" that you shake and it says yes/no/maybe .. End of the day nothing beats research & facts. If one HEAVILY plays GTA5, Witcher 3, and probably ~10 other games, then I'd say its worth it. If not then rather tune your system properly :)

If you look at well-optimised games IE Doom, COD IW, OverWatch the FPS % difference is <5%. If your res increases, so does the strain on the GPU, meaning lower FPS and less for the RAM & CPU to do.

No such thing as future proofing atm :p pcie 4 and pcie 5 will be booming by 2020 and probably have 20 core chips for retail

From what I've seen your fps is more stable to a degree :p or minimum fps is slightly higher

So as someone considering upping into 7700k again as well, I should rather hold out until end of the year? Also 4770k owner, no overclock done.

@souljazk , would you be able to assist me in getting the max out of my 4770k? Collection a H100i this weekend.

Sure, will help where I can. Drop me a PM, lets see how time works out this weekend. What mobo do you have? Basics to cover:

1) Dont skimp on TIM. Noctua looks good, not sure if available in SA. Thermal Grizzly seems good too & locally available.
1.1) Fans on the rad can make a good difference, esp in noise.
2) Case cooling - Faster you can remove heat, the better.
2.1) VRM cooling - very NB - get some new quality thermal pads, and try get some airflow going there. According to Gamers Nexus, light airflow helps quite a bit, but who want it light ;)

Yuh, nah. Don’t overclock.

You catch overclock fever and suddenly, you find yourself spending the whole weekend trying to hit just that little bit more.

Soon, you’ve stolen an aircon unit to try get sub zero temps and your whole room is full of really expensive high end cooler parts.

Overclocking. Not even once.

So from 4690k to ryzen3000 or 8600k?

I lost control of my mouse today.......
Next thing i knew i had ordered a 9700k, new z390 board, 2x 8g ddr 3200 ram, Nzxt x62 cooler + some thermal grizzly paste
So ye i folded

Sounds like you needed a new mouse too.
