Hi,

I come before you seeking advice on the upgrade path for me to follow to slowly build up my machine to a beast in the most cost effective manner.

This is what I currently have:

CPU: Intel Core i5 6400
Motherboard: Gigabyte B250M-DS3H-CF
RAM: 2 x Transcend 8GB DDR4-2132 (1066 Mhz I think)
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB
Boot Drive: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB
Storage Drive: Samsung HDD 2TB (not sure the rpm)
Case: KWG Vela M4 Case

I know my CPU is the bottleneck and my ram, and my case doesn't seem to be coping with the heat generated by the machine which is evident when I am playing Rust for a few hours and there is a very little burning smell.

I also run a second computer which hosts my media drives and the only reason I do that is because the KWG case can't take anymore hdd. Ideally I would like to find a case with good airflow and space for 6 drives.

In terms of budget, I don't think I would be able to buy it all in one go. But hopefully second hand I will be able to secure part by part. I would say R5000 to R8000 in total.

Maybe my dream is unrealistic. Any comments and advice is highly appreciated.

I would suggest you give a budget. Then people can give constructive feedback.

If there is no budget just go for the best of the best?

If you are looking for a decent upgrade that will last a few years go for a 2700X/2600x, mobo, and 16gb 3200Mhz ram.

Thank you for the input, I will edit the original post

What about an i7 6700/7700 and decent ram and a AIO to carry some heat out the case?
That sounds doable. I do think this case has to be replaced so I can fit all my drives in a get a plex server running again but I am struggling to find a decent priced case that is capable of holding more than 3 drives

I had a 6400 and found someone in here who traded me for his 6700 and some cash, it hardly breaks a sweat in most games and I have it hooked up to a rad on the exhaust fan mount. Using a pretty crappy case from Takealot. Does the job though.

I don't think I can overclock this ram. it's just generic ram. And would the cause more heat in the case>?

I really depends on the quality of the RAM Sticks.

You could have Samsung B-Die because Samsung had to fill the order, even for cheap sticks.

I wouldn’t worry about heat. RAM won’t put out that much heat.

what would happen if I purchased ram like this KLEVV CRAS X RGB 16GB 3200MHz DDR4 Gaming OC Memory Kit for my current mb? Would it work just at a lower mhz? or should I rather get something like takealot.com
I have never heard of that brand. Try get Crucial Ballistix 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 BL2K8G32C16U4B.

It'll do 4000mhz.
