Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Not yet but I'm seeding the torrent lol.

really hope they fixed its battery life issues, the biggest issue i had with 18 and 19 was that my battery lasted about 1/4th of the time that it did on windows, (and yes i switched to intel graphics)

Never had battery issues on 18 or 19 and I'm on a 5 year old 4th gen i3 dell

Still get a good 4 to 5 hours work time on it. If i forget to plug it in at work it'll die around lunch time

Might make the move to Ubuntu on my X1 Carbon... only thing I'd miss is the Windows Hello facial unlocker which I use many times a day.

Is there currently a way to run optimised battery charging to stop charging at 80%? The setting on my X1 is done at firmware, so I can boot Windows, change the setting and boot into Ubuntu and it holds the setting which is nice.

Upgrade from 19.10 borked the root partition on my T470 so I did a fresh install. it's a great step up but for some reason my finger print reader isn't working.

Possibly a bus related issue. Boot up a live cd of a flavour where your fingerprint reader worked, check which buses are active, boot 20, check again..

Take it from there, as it's the easiest way to check.

Apart from that, could also be a kernel option that's not enabled

Did you go the "certified device experience" route?

I did a reinstall on friday, upgraded from pop os
Was tweaking , and gaming since then, I've had no issues, everything just works on ubuntu aswell ( take that apple thread)

Could be a weird power optimisation thing that isn't installed. I'm new to Ubuntu, but I recall on Arch I always had to install some battery optimisations/power management stuff. You might want to look into finding something like that for your machine

my dell precision can do 12+ hours on windows, can barely hit 4 on ubuntu. Honestly i think that even though it allows me to switch to integrated graphics, the nvidia card never actually turns off, and thus continues drawing power

You might want to try Pop! OS, I think they fixed the Nvidia Optimus issue there. You can also try switching between the nouveau and proprietary drivers for your nvidia card. I think you're right, though, nvidia is known for having issues with its switching tech

ive done that, doesnt help. I'm sure theres a way to manually turn off the card, I just havent been able to find it yet

Normally you'd have to do it in the UEFI/BIOS. Not an ideal way to do it, if you ask me. Again, I think Pop! OS has some workaround and it's built on top of Ubuntu, so maybe you can find the relevant package. I'll do some research when I get my "new" machine. I don't really use Ubuntu normally, but I'm all for making things work that shouldn't
