GearBest either have a really shit rate with Paypal or they pass the processing costs onto the customer.

I went to purchase this phone, the costs came out to $612.80, paid with credit card and it came out to R9707. That's R1000 more than a direct exchange of $612.80.

I don't know how other people are doing it but I thought that was just insane. Canceled the order instantly.

You're sure about that? I ordered a Phone on the 7th August for $221.39. Paid under R3100 for it. A difference of about R100 or so...

I don't have PayPal so I chose a PayPal via card (?) option. I'm just not too sure what I did.

you must select the option to allow your bank to do the processing of the payment and exchange rate. It more than often is cheaper than paypal processing it.

You can either let PayPal do the conversion (for which they give you a very bad rate) or your card issuer. By default PayPal select their conversion option. The video below describes how to change the setting in PayPal. I saw an immediate saving of about 5%.
