The CWC Thread

Have never supported the Aussies and likely never will but I cannot ignore the fact that as a cricket playing nation they have the biggest and best BMT.

Upstaging India at home in front of 130 thousand plus expectant fans is no easy feat.

CSA needs a Rassie Erasmus to upset the apple cart and really allow for some meaningful change. There's more than enough talent of all colours in our leagues to do away with archaic quotas. But generally these aren't sporting decisions as much as it is political.

Beginning to think I'll never see SA win the CWC in my lifetime.

So, is our collective heartbreak over?

Well, as the T20 WC comes to a close; so does the era of Virat Kohli in the T20 arena.

The man struggled through the tournament looking poultry, at best. But such is the quality of legends is that when it really matters they
make their presence felt. And so it was for Kohli in his last appearance for India in a T20 international.

A few loose balls to Virat early on in his innings was all that was needed to prime the beast. And he took the opportunity to dust off the cobwebs and he was off to the races, effectively nullifying SA's salvo of cheap, early wickets.

Jansen looked totally out of sorts for some reason but the rest of the bowling department were up to the task. I do feel there's some unanswered questions regarding lines and lengths towards the end but it's very hard to contain India's explosive power hitters.

Set a massive total and the highest in a T20 WC final; more than SA had managed to score all tournament; it was going to take something special to get over the line against a rampant India.

QDK needed to shine upfront for SA to have a chance and for a while it looked like he would be the one to lead the the way home. Reeza not the first time - but maybe for the last - failed with the bat. Skipper didn't fair much better unfortunately but the QDK-Stubbs-Klaasen-Miller string of partnerships brought the belief that this could be SA's time.

QDK falling again to the pull like he's done a few times this tournament was a crucial wicket. Stubbs did some good work with keeping the scorers busy but also fell at the worst possible time for the Proteas. The Klaasen-Miller show really brought the game alive and the sense that this truly could be SA's time. The big over 20+ over by Klaasen was a turning point and effectively swung the odds in SA's favour.
However, some professional time wasting on the part of the Indians broke the momentum that SA had built and a wild swing by Heini to lose his wicket when play was resumed was the sliver of a chance India needed to get back into the game.

Miller came out with purpose and intent. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that his strike was indeed a 6. We've seen the TV ump take longer, harder looks at relatively less important decisions in the tourny; yet here in the final in an absolutely crucial moment chose to hastily gloss over the possibility of the foot having touched the barrier. That 6 and Miller remaining at the crease changes the complexion of the remaining balls play out. We'll never know. Anyway, gotta feel for him also. Having to bat with a very long tail makes it difficult to decide between going hard at it alone or trying to work the ball around for singles, waiting for the loose one to put away.

It's very easy to call this a choke and ignore the fact that the other team also has a say in how the game plays out.
India has been the dominant team in world cricket for many years now. The current team comprises seasoned players mixed with some new blood who collectively held their nerve.
Bumrah has been a game changer whenever he has been brought in to bowl and did that once again in the final overs.

In the end, the game was lost through small margins but ultimately it's those very margins that make the difference between lifting a trophy and being a runner-up.

Hats off to Team India but man this Protea group has earned my respect. They've scrapped hard for every win and I've really enjoyed Markram's captaincy. It's been a team effort aided by some individual moments of brilliance along the way.

I reckon this was the last hurrah for the likes of QDK, Miller and maybe some of the bowlers. Concerned about the lack of new talent coming through.

As much as I enjoy watching the IPL I can't help but feel it was designed to benefit Indian cricket at the expense of other country's local leagues. I tried to keep up to speed with the SA20 and watched a couple matches live as well. The quality of the cricket - to my mind - is not where it needs to be if we're hoping for this pool of players to be competing for places in the national team.

Anyway, that's a problem for people with political motives to solve.

T20 WC 2024 done and dusted.

I seem to recall there being a couple more posts on this thread.. did we lose data?

Anyhoo, unlucky for the Women's team losing to NZ in the final.
Bit loose with the ball giving away quite a bit of extras. Batting, the top order lost their composure and exposed a generally untested middle/lower order with too much to do.

Got close in the end but had one of the better batters held their nerve it could have been a much closer game.

Props nonetheless.

At the same time must reflect on AB being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame! Well deserved!!

Wow!

SA must be cursed! Another tournament, another semi-final, another whimper of an exit.

Doesn't Rassie wanna come save the Proteas now?

I agree that it was another poor performance from Proteas, but don't be too quick to judge. As usual the whole f*cking world needs to bend to India's will when it comes to cricket. Since the tournament is hosted by Pakistan and India doesn't get along with Pakistan, they refused to play in Pakistan. Any other team would have been removed from the tournament, but not India. So the ICC changes the tournament so that all India's games are played at a single venue (in a different country), Dubai. So the whole tournament India is in one location, stays in the same hotel, practices at the same fields. Essentially they have a "home base" setup for the entire tournament.

The rest of the teams have to travel back and forth to games whilst India just sit back and enjoy. Also nice to play all your games at the same venue, almost like a home ground for them.

Example: Before the semi-final, before the final pool game (India vs NZ) both Australia and SA had to fly to Dubai so that they are there for the semi-final game vs India. (India was in the semi's either way, the final game vs NZ was just about who tops the pool and who comes second). So either way India was playing in the semi-final and regardless of ending top or second in their pool they were playing at "home" in Dubai. So the ICC flies both SA and AUS to Dubai so that whoever plays India in the semi is there on time. So then SA who had to go play NZ (after losing to India in last pool game) had to fly BACK to Pakistan after just flying out to Dubai JUST IN CASE they had to play India for the semi-final.

Fuck the ICC and fuck India. Sorry rant over.

Disappointing but NZ smoked us in all departments.

This is cool, except we lost to NZ and the flight was 1hr40.

If they lost in the final to India it would be a different story.

Don't think its quite that simple. Instead of having a rest and recovering after the ENG game and traveling to wherever the semi was going to be and prepare for the game, SA had to spend a day traveling to Dubai and the next day spend another day traveling back, that's 2 days traveling back and forth for nothing. It might only be a 1h45 flight, but its an international flight so that is being at the airport 2hrs before your flight, standing in ques for check-in, security, customs, border agents, etc. then the flight, then luggage pickup, getting on a bus, getting to hotel unpack, eat something, go to sleep, wake up the next morning and do it all over again back to Pakistan. You can't tell me that isn't draining.

I am not making excuses, we lost. NZ was better on the day. I am just frustrated that everyone has to bend over for India because THEY refused to play in Pakistan.

Don't know why SA & Aus had to fly to Dubai and then one fly back the next day, why couldn't they just wait one day longer to find out who is playing India and then let them fly out to Dubai.

Now that I've calmed down a wee bit since yesterday I think I'm ready to have a calmer discussion about it.

Let's deal with the elephant in the room.
Does India have an unfair advantage in this tournament by effectively having every game as a home game? Yes.
Is that an excuse for a professional outfit like the Proteas? Nope.

To be fair, the guys did fairly well. They has solid wins against the Afghans and English.
They unfortunately came unstuck at the wrong time.
Mistakes in the field, some loose bowling and not being able to really turn the screws to limit the NZ batters is what lead to them having to chase a mammoth score.
With the bat they did the opposite of the NZers. Allowed too many dot balls, too many maidens. That pressure just builds and builds.
Some poor shot selection amongst by the middle/tail batters.

To come within 50 runs at the end shows we had a pretty good chance of winning this IF the bowlers could have restricted NZ and the top order batters did a better job of rotating strike instead of letting the game get away from them.

We should rename this to "The Cricket Thread"

Good fight back by NZ after a horrible start. 250 looks competitive on paper but India have home ground advantage here.
Going to be interesting to see how the pitch plays in the second innings.

Another day another final. This time it's the 2025 ICC World Test Championship final!

The boys have done well to get themselves to this point; especially given that they played fewer tests (therefore slimmer margin for error) that the other big teams.

On paper, the Proteas line up doesn't look like it holds a candle to the Aussies. Some 'interesting' inclusions and omissions in the squad but none of that matters now.

It's going to be a tough battle but we'll be supporting them all the way!

Ai tog man!
Only the Proteas can send a man on such an emotional rollercoaster!

Rabada stood tall and led the attack with an incredible 5-for! It's no small feat bowling the mighty Aussies out for a measly 200 on the first day!

What an incredible moment for the team.

And then they went into bat, and all that glory soon faded into a gory batting affair :-(

It's going to take some serious work from skipper and the tail to try and keep the dream alive.

Ndigi must get some solid sleep too. Dropping Patterson for him hasn't proved to be a wise call. He needs to come back strong in the second innings and show that he's earned that spot.

Man, it's tough being a Proteas supporter.

Mulder bowled really well I think but yeah, Ngidi needs to fuck off. He wasn't nearly as accurate with his length as the other bowlers.

IN RABADA WE TRUST

If you are in a territory where there are no rights issues with cricket broadcast, you can watch it for free in the ICC website. Seems to be the commentators on the broadcast we are used to. Pollock & Ravi on currently.

Skipper falls. Last recognized batters and then it's into the tail.

It's so evenly poised right now. Either way, so far I reckon the WTC has succeeded in setting up an entertaining game for the final. But things could still swing a lot.
