If its for home / personal use you can install Xpenology on a standard PC.

If you do plan to make use of OpenVPN etc on the unit, then you'll prob be better off with a '+' model. They usually have better CPU's.

I don't have a spare PC lying around, if I did I would probably consider that.
Wanting something with a small footprint so I can shove it in my 4u rack with the other stuff.
