So i have a payed of Hyundai i10 1L (not the grand) 2015 with 167k ok the clock

A co worker of mine bought a bakie and wants to sell his 2009 mitsubishi Lancer 2.0L GLS 190k on the clock

But he i asked him if he would trade me for my car and he agreed.

I just wanted to make sure if the Lancer is a good kar to have.

Cos i want a car that a bit bigger and more comfortable and can overtake alot better cos in the i10 im always in the slow lane.

Bot our cars are in very good condition with no mechanical problems or exterior damage.

Any advice?

Not sure about parts availability and things like that - you'll pay more for just about everything (service, parts, repairs).

More concerning though, is why he thinks this is a fair trade? What is wrong with the Lancer?

I have a paid off 2013 hyundai i10. It is going for the 150k service tomorrow and it's in excellent condition.

I would be willing to trade for the lancer.. Pending condition and a test drive of course.

Agree here - Lancer that has done an average of 13 571.43 KMs a year vs a i10 that has done an average of 20 875 KMs a year.

Autotrader/Cars.co.za shows that a Lancer with those figures is selling for around R75k, and yours is around R90k.

Honestly, if your car is still running well - keep it. Trust me, you don't want a car that gives you problems.

Obviously that coworker is going to say his car is in very good condition with no mechanical problems, but you can never really know. It's like WeBuyCars, they're not going to tell you if something's actually wrong with it lol.

Plus there's a lot more parts for a Hyundai i10 available and it's more fuel efficient.

When the Lancer was released in SA I recall the CAR review for it indicating it wasn't as refined as other offerings and the cabin was also cramped in comparison to other cars in its class. Also, why you want a 2l na engine at a time that fuel prices are so high they make Snoop Dogg look like an 80-year-old conservative Republican?

Take it from me, the headache of a car that is slow but reliable is NOTHING compared to a car that breaks and is fast/fun.
Go the boring safe root. I went through that exercise and ended up selling my Fast/fun car again for something that reliable and sips fuel and im waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay(yes that much) happier Those lancers are THIRSTY BOYS! My friend had a Lancer, sold it within a year!

My 2c, dont do it. keep the i10 those cars are excellent in reliability, excellent on fuel consumption but a tad boring. Boring is good in this case

I have a 2012 Lancer 2.0 and while it is a nice car to drive, your fuel consumption will be a lot higher than the i10. The only situation where it is even slightly fuel efficient is cruising on the freeway, then I get about 7.9L/100KM. In the city, driving like a grandma it's closer to 10L/100KM, and if I'm driving like I stole it then it's about 15L/100KM.

The Lancer does have more pull, but honestly just barely, after all it's not an Evo. Top speed is good but acceleration is average. On top of this the service costs are mental, you would think I bought an Audi at this rate.

Sheesh I'd never say it is cramped I am a bigger gent and it feels more than big enough.

I love my Lancer and have never complained about anything driving it. It will do what you want but it is a real petrol hog being an old car with a 2.0L I cry at my petrol bill.

I've always said if i win the lottery i will never get rid of the car rather have it broken down and service every nook and cranny then tricked out beyond reason xD

I am with everyone on this, the lancer is cool and fun but then again you are stuck in same traffic like the rest of us, nothing beats sitting next to an RS3 (1.2 million) or an R8 (3 million), and you both going 60 km/h on William Nicol, they are literally burning money, the only reason why I traded in from an Audi to Subaru, was to go off road,

fuel economy is also real issue, the price will never go down from this point on,

also services triple, an i10 will be 2.5k and an lancer around 6k. minor service. plus 2009 vs 2015...

don't do it man, use the money on other cool things.

I bet he wants to rice out GLS to look like an Evo , he probably sat all night browsing the Autostyle website for fake carbon bits :p

Try thirsty 3.0L. Why did @Confucius not warn me? The bastard.

  1. The Lancer is a very good car
  2. It is not a good trade, you'll be losing close on R20k in trade value
  3. Insurance on older cars is tricky, sometimes even impossible
Keep the i10. I assure you that you're overtaking me regularly in my Bantam - That thing doesn't have a speedometer, it has a calendar it's so slow.

0-100: 2 working days.

Evening all.
Thanks for all the feedback

Im taking the lancer for a spin tomorrow but will most likely keep the i10 i think

I know my co worker wel and the car is in very good condition.

I also agree that i might be able to get more for my car.

I think its just me wanting something different aswell.

It also really depends on your personal situation I guess. But a paid off car which is light on fuel is basically gold at this point.

I recall I did… and you said you knew what you were getting into… well, u didn’t at the time.

But after seeing some of the posts here, the s4 isn’t so bad considering you can smile your way to the next garage instead. My average Fuelly stats show 12.7l / 100km, best at 10.2

That’s not the bantam, it’s you. Before getting discovery insure, there was no I10 that was going to overtake me

Be glad. My ford gets 12l/100km when i drive like a granny. And its a freaking 2l. Atleast you have a supercharger making it worthwhile.

Sounds like a mistress would serve you better and likely cost less in the long term.

Often boring, reliable and fuel efficient is great when it comes to cars. Some might argue that extends to women too. 🤷
