Description of Bad Deal:
The buyer and myself reached an agreement of sale for an iPhone X. The price agreed was R3000. The buyer requested that I ship the phone to him first and upon receipt he will make payment as he has had bad experiences with scammers in the past. Given that he has a way higher iTrader rating than me, I obviously obliged his request and sent him the phone. He collected the phone from PostNet on 25 August.
Upon collection, he inspected the phone and told me that he was happy with it. I sent him the bank details and he said he was going to eft immediately.
He was unable to eft on the day of collection, because he realised he did not de-register his old phone (which he wiped) from the banking app. He said he will go to the bank the next day to sort it out.
The next day (26 August) he went to the bank but was having trouble setting up the facial scan as he did not have his ID with him. He said he will instead go to an FNB atm and deposit the money in my account. He did not end up doing because he said it was flooding in cpt and that he’ll have to do it in the morning.
The next day (Friday 27 August) he said he wasn’t able to do the direct deposit as the atms were not taking cash. He said he will have to wait until Monday and do a direct deposit at the bank. I asked him if he could get someone to send the money on his behalf as I can’t wait till Monday. He said that he will ask his mate and then he didn’t get back to me.
The next day (28 August) I asked him again to send the money, he said his friend hasn’t responded.
The next day (29 August) I asked him again and told him he’s putting me in a difficult situation. He offered to send the phone back to me and send me R200 cash for the troubles. I told him I did not want the phone back. He then offered to get someone to ewallet the cash on his behalf, that too did not materialise. He then said he will go to the bank the next day and deposit first thing in the morning.
The next day (Monday 30 August) he went to the bank but said his phone died while trying to set up the bank app. His girlfriend deposited R1000 into my account and he said he will send the rest the next day with an extra R200 for the trouble.
The next day (31 August) he wakes up at 15:35 and tries to rush to the bank before it closes at 16:00. His excuse was he “overslept”. Needless to say, he got there late and once again promised me that he will go first thing in the morning.
The next day (Wednesday 1 September) he said he was going to the bank to do the deposit. Later on he tells me that his debit orders went off and that he gets paid every Friday. He offers to send the phone back and that I must keep the R1000 for the troubles. Alternatively, he can try R1000 today and R1000 on Friday. I told him that I will not take his R1000 for nothing and that if he wishes to compensate me, he can give me half. I’ll let him pay R1000 today and R1500 on Friday. He was happy and agreed. Later that day he only deposits R700 into my account because the machine wasn’t accepting his other notes. He said he will just send the balance of R1800 on Friday.
Friday (3 September) arrives. He tells me he’s waiting for his salary to reflect in his account and then he’ll send it through eft.
His salary did not reflect and I had to once again wait until Monday.
Monday (6 September) he tells me that his money is still not in. He then tells me he’s going to send the phone back and that I am welcome to open a bad deals thread. (I did not reply to him)
Tuesday (7 September) he sends me a message saying his company offered him a full time contract and now he will be getting paid monthly, that’s why his money didn’t reflect on Friday. He told me he will be getting paid on 15 September and if I’m willing to wait, he will send me R2300 making the total for the phone R4000 (so an extra R1000 for all the bullshit). I agreed but asked him if he could send me at least something today. He said he will try send R500. That didn’t happen.
Wednesday (8 September) he said he’s struggling to get R500.
Tuesday (14 September) he messaged me assuring that he will pay the full amount tomorrow (15 September) on the agreed date.
On the 15th he tells me that his money should be in his account around 6pm and if it’s not, he’s going to eft me from his mother’s Capitec account.
The next day (16 September) he tells me that the eft from his mom’s account will be done at 7:30 am. He said he will send proof of payment (he did not). I told him I did not receive the payment. He investigates and tells me that his mom did not press ‘pay and clear’ on the payment, so Ill have to wait. But said he will send R1000 with pay and clear.
[At this point in time, I’ve received R1000+R700+R1000=R2700]
The next day (Friday 17 September) I told him I received the R1000 but the other R1300 has not come through.
Monday (20 September) I ask him for proof of payment as I still have not received the R1300. He tells me he will ask his mom for it but doesn’t end up sending it.
Tuesday morning (21 September) the money is still not in my account. He then investigates and tells me that his mom “made a mistake” with the payment and that he will do it personally himself. I send him my account number again and then he tells me he has forwarded it to his mom???and that she’ll make payment asap. Anyway, he assures me that she has paid it, I ask him for proof of payment and he tells me he’s waiting for his mom to send it. (He never sends it.)

He tells me that he will do a direct deposit at FNB and that I must return the money his mom sent when it eventually reflects in my account. I told him I definitely will. He says he will go to the ATM at 6pm that night. At 6:45pm he tells me that the machines aren’t working, yet again, and that he will have dinner and check again at 8pm. He does not get back to me the rest of the night after numerous times of me calling him. He was online on WhatsApp multiple times but just ignored me.
The next day (Thursday 23 September) he messages me in the morning saying he had “WhatsApp problems” and that he’s going to the bank early in the day so that if the atm are still not working, he’ll have time to go to others. Frustratingly, he only goes at 6pm again!! He only gets to the ATM at 19:39 and tells me that the machines aren’t working. I tell him to send it through Checkers Money Market instead, but he did not have his ID with him.
The next day (Friday 24 September) he assures me he’s going to Checkers to get it done. He gets there at 12pm and send me a video showing me that the Checkers is still new and under construction so it does not have a Money Market. He then tells me he’s going to rush to another Checkers to send the money. I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM HIM SINCE.
I told him that he’s got until that night (last night 24/9/2021) to send me the money or I’m opening up a bad deals thread. He has blue ticked all my messages and completely ignored me.
There’s no place for people like this on Carbonite.
Ps: I even sent him a voucher for a free 6 pack of beers as an incentive to get the payment done on Thursday morning.
