I have always run my Steam games off of a external drive via USB 3.0 unles I'm using a huge ass case. Never had any problems so please do not post about the pros vs cons of using it this way.

What I want to know is. I'm getting my new laptop next week. Will be replacing the 1TB included drive with an SSD and use an external for all my games. Can I in the meantime attach the drive to my current laptop, install Steam on said drive and start downloading my library and then simply pop it into the new lappy once it arrives?

Don't feel like wasting 500GB of data for it not to work.

You don't need to download anything. Install Steam. Create a new library pointing to your external folder. Then in Steam just install each game you want by clicking "install" on your game tile in your Steam library. Steam will check the integrity and you'll be sorted. Simple as that.

Sorry I should have stated that this is a brand new drive, formatted and sold my old drive that had my library on.

Yup... install Stream and download your games in the mean time... when you attach it to the laptop just point to the external library per what quantumtraveler said.

That's it. Steam is really good at this. But note when you point your library you will still have to press "install" on each game before you can play. Steam has to verify the integrity of the game cache then you good to go. It takes a out 30 seconds per game.
