Pity, we haven't had anything new since Enterprise. Which I enjoyed. ( <-- The internet will hate me for that comment)

Definitely something different for the Trekkie universe. Acting and story 6-7/10. FX 10/10.

Definitely enjoying it so far. As some have said, acting and shit can be meh and a bit overdone (so just like usual Star Trek? XD) but the FX are amazing and the story it is telling is pretty cool. Klingon Cold War

Indeed. Something I've always wanted to see explored is the Klingon Cold War and how the Federations dealt with the Klingons.

Not created or owned by Netflix. It is a CBS production, and Netflix was given the licensing rights outside of America and Canada. Hence Netflix can say "Netflix Original"

And Netflix not sharing, we will need to see once the show has actually run till the end of the season, we obviously don't know what licensing has been done between them and other parties.
Though I don't think they are particularly happy with Multichoice or Sony in SA, considering how they had such a strong grip on content in SA, especially content Sony licensed from Netflix (reducing their initial offering in SA).

As for the show. I am enjoying it. Would make more sense to me currently if they said it takes place in the Kelvin universe, given the designs, Klingons, film style, technology. But we will see how it ties into the Prime Universe.

I love star trek, but this show just left a bad taste in my mouth. I made it through the first episode and then tried the second, turned it off half way through. Story feels flat, dialogue was terrible, and the entire klingon dialogue was just so painful on the ears. So yeah won't be watching this thing any longer.

I don't know, to me it really feels like pretty standard Star Trek series stuff. Maybe a bit more modern but still. And the Klingon is at least not completely butchered

The first 2 episodes were a prologue. They were average at best, but haven't we seen previous Star Trek episodes that were mediocre? We must still be introduced to most of the main characters, so let's wait and see.

I don't know ey. Watched Episode 3 yesterday night and I'm starting to have second thoughts on it. Gonna sound bad...but it feels more like Star Wars than Star Trek.

I understand the story they're going towards and trying to tell (no spoilers) but I don't think that lends itself well to Star Trek. It doesn't have the classic science feel. The need for hope and the realisation of a better future.

It simply feels like another action shooter set vaguely in the Trekkie verse. Forgive me if I'm wrong, I think it is Prime?

Anyway, will give it more of a chance and carry on watching but I'm starting to get cold feet about it...

Also, as a side note...I'm interested to know what you guys think... I'm not sure how they're planning on framing the Klingons for the rest of the show but they really don't feel like the bad guys right now.

Their motives for what they wish to do don't seem all that bad actually. Willing to ensure their independence and individuality and whatnot. Mmmmm...

Having watched all the previous star treks and finishing episode 3 last night I think the show has good potential. The episode have been enjoyable so far, albeit light on classic star trek formula of encountering a problem and solving it through discovering something. That said they have laid a good introduction and the story arc is interesting. The characters seem to be more human and I found them more interesting so far than many of the previous series' crews, notably they appear to be subject to normal human failings and in retrospect seem more believable than most in previous series.

With the Klingon *"problem" it will be interesting to see how the ship and crew maintain the "hope and the realization of a better future" and the conflict of solving the *"problem" v star fleets principles. I agree with BARGUILD that the Klingon's are not portrayed as bad, similarly I would not say the star fleet ship and crew are good, which makes it interesting.

I will keep watching.

my enthusiasm is eroding with every episode I watch. yesterday's 'Choose your pain', was particularly bad. I loved the SciFi of Star Trek previous generations, but what I loved most were the delicate handling of dilemma in the face of certain death, the morals, the monologues and wit that portrayed a deeply advanced civilization that had long abandoned our failings as humans of today.

But now to have proud rogue captains with unlimited control and power, condemned crew members allowed to engage with the captain on the bridge not to mention completely disregarding captains orders in just about every episode so far etc, is just such a departure from what Star Trek stood for. I mean, what happened to the prime directive? All of a sudden the entire star fleet has no problem hunting down exotic creatures for their own personal selfish war efforts. And since when do crew members swear? Aij.

Then comes the unoriginal concept of the mycelium spores, a life form that pervades throughout all space and has unlimited power.. Reminded me of the midichlorians of star wars, aka the Force.

I could go on and on about how I despise this reboot, but in the end I will probably continue watching it anyway unless it goes from bad to worse.

very true , felling the same frustrations. this is looking more like a iron fist disaster.
the f bomb was totally out of place and lacked the comedic punch line and came off rather lame

Hey man,

not to be "that" guy or anything but you just said you watched the previous Star Treks and yet you have no idea how things exist such as 'proud rogue captains'. If you are confused by that then I encourage you to go and rewatch all the Star Trek again and see if you notice all the Section 31 guys. Might change your mind eh?

At the start, I was a bit disappointed and it carried on until I noticed the number on the Discovery. NCC-1031. I noticed it in one of the camera passes and it hit me suddenly. Went and did some research and there are a lot of theories going around.

I won't ruin it but go and look up Section 31 from other Star Treks and look up exactly what they are. Then consider NCC-1031 as an easter egg for whats to come and then give it some on what the show could be about. When I wondered if the show was trying to tell the story of S31, I was all immediately 'OH YEAH!!!'.

Literally explains everything and makes perfect sense mate. Look it up... won't spoil anymore.

You too, read my previous reply, go look up Section 31 and what they're about then consider STD (Kek) from that aspect and come back and tell me what you think.

No it's fine, I have only watched TNG and the Original series, and a few episodes here and there of the others, so I'm far from a 'trekkie', but still a fan. Actually the rogue captain Lorca bothers me less than Michael Burnham who ironically is driven by her emotions despite being apparently raised by Vulcans. I'll look into that stuff you mention about NCC-1031 etc, I really want this to be a good series, but I have been re-watching TNG while waiting for new episodes to drop, and I have to be honest, some of the old TNG episodes were a lot more interesting than Discovery so far, albeit, Discovery is an evolving story and some of TNG were painful to watch (boring).

I guess it's too soon to judge Discovery as you mention, there could be some interesting things coming, but I mean the spore thing was done better in Netflix's 'The Expanse', in fact you'd think the Mycelium spores from Discovery and the Proto Molecule from The Expanse were the same substance, same FX, and very similar properties etc.

So I guess I'm more 'meh' at this stage, but will keep on watching regardless, hopefully it picks up.

Alright, not a huge Trekkie then.

Will give you a quick rundown of Section 31 and then you tell me whether you reckon the show could be about them. Also before I say anything...

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

*YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED* *YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED* *YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED*

So, Section 31 is an organisation that exists within the Federation and Star Fleet that is completely off the books. They recruit their members by capture and not by conventional means. When they recruit, they recruit secretly and without people knowing.

*similar to what happened to Burnham (who, just to be fair, I also don't like very much)

There job is anything. There are no rules and they are allowed to do what they like in order to ensure the survival of Star Fleet and civilization. They also traditionally where black and black badges

*hence some of the characters being surprised in the episode when they see black badges and have no clue what it means

They are above top secret and do not need to follow the prime directive. I repeat, they do not need to follow the prime directive. Completely independent. Completely. With the single goal of ensuring survival.

Within previous shows, they have gone so far as attempting to wipe out species with biochemical warfare in order to ensure survival. They are that deep into it.

Now onto the theory part.

The show being about S31 PERFECTLY explains the whole spore drive plot point since the show is a prequel, and the technology is not shown in any of the sequel shows which means the technology might not have worked or might have been kept so top secret nobody knows, like in a top secret organisation that nobody knows about maybe?

Also, the show is seemingly about the Discovery crew doing anything they can to save the Federation from the Klingons, like a top secret organisation that nobody knows about might do?

*OWN OPINION*

I think my logic, and the logic of others who have thought about this theory is quite sound and logical. And personally, if they use already established Trekkie lore to create a story that is dark and shows the darker side of Star Fleet then I think it could go very well and it might do nicely.

*OBJECTIONS*

I am not a blind fan by the way. There are some things about the show that make me salty and crispy like all hell. But that is for another conversation. Burnham is one of them by the way. Really pisses me off but I like the bigger picture story being told.

Ah, that makes perfect sense, for some reason I vaguely remember s31 from some episode being mentioned somewhere. Very vaguely. That would explain a lot, but I haven't liked Burnham at all, there's just something off about her performance. I would prefer it if Captain Lorca was the protagonist, he at least has some wit and a logic about him that's interesting.

Looking forward to the rest of the season, no doubt though.
