I've read that whenever the question is asked ''Which is better for long term storage, SSD or normal HHD's?" that the answer is always, ''For now, HHD's''
When will this change? Or will long term storage never be an option for SSD's/M.2's?

You have to understand they serve different purposes my bro. SSD is for speed and responsiveness and breathing new life into pc. In short, ssd is like porn for your pc. Now HDD is more for backup, storage, and hording those 4k hdr porn lol. So basically speaking, you want an ssd for responsiveness etc but an hdd if you are a collecter. SSDs usually top out around 4tb. any higher would be extremely expensive. At that point a smaller 512 or 1tb ssd would do you good and a large 10tb hdd would be even awesome. So it depends on your needs. SSDs now last long as compared to how they used to due to improvements in tech so there is no telling which one will last longer in terms of longevity.

Long term... as in, you want to save something important and tuck it under a floorboard for 20-30 years?

Say I had this idea back in 1983... I would pack my data in a file on my Commodore 64, save it to a high-quality FeCr cassette and store away.
35 years later, I want to restore my data. Even if the tape is by some miracle intact and playable, it would be a crazy task trying to find a working C64 with a tape recorder.

In 35 years time, even if your hard drive is still alive, you'd probably face the same issue: finding a SATA device able to read it :)

True, but I can always transfer the files to newer technology as and when they become available. Like I want to do now from HHD to ssd:)

More like in saving it on a separate drive. I do not keep much, everything fits easily on my 2tb drives. I still have photos of me and my family on vacation 40 years ago. I want my son to one day be able to say the same. So I am not a real hoarder, but I do want some stuff forever.

why not buy online cloud storage that is permanent and will not break :):):)
I do not trust my stuff in the clouds yet lol.
How save and un-hackable is the cloud really? I just trust one copy in my PC and one copy in my safe more ATM.

IDK, bro... your long-term is then +/- 10 years, until the new technology is out.
Most HDDs and SSDs should live that long. But they also may die for no reason whatsoever and without warning.
Having both at your home is not safe - because of fire and theft, for example - would take out both copies at the same time.
If you go for two-drive solution, rather keep one at your uncle's place.

I'd say cloud is safer, as you have better odds of your backup going bad than Google or Amazon going bankrupt...
At the same time, you probably have better chances of having your PC stolen and the thief getting access to your files, than someone hacking into your Google drive.

If you distrust the cloud from the exposure point of view, you could always encrypt the files prior to uploading.

If you don't trust the provider security then add your own encryption, then you have multiple security factors of which 1 only you theoretically possess
