SOLVED! PC turns on but doesn't display any output

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately I can't boot the pc so I can't run the memtest and my home pc runs on ddr4 ram so I can't try that. But you did give me the idea to clean up the slots. Trying that now with isopropyl alcohol (thanks covid for making this easily accessible) just lightly wiped it up by dabbing so I don't get any fibres stuck anywhere. About to attempt another series of booting it should be dry now

yes that will also do a good job! bummer you cannot test the RAM, but sounds like a faulty / problematic memory slot.
You can run MemTest86 off a flash drive even if the PC is not booting - i.e. use a different computer to make the boot disk: MemTest86 - Creating a MemTest86 boot disk in Windows

However if the PC is not POSTing then it won't help.

Okay I got lucky on a post. This time on the right slot. I'm going to attempt this memtest while the pc is on. If anyone has any other suggestions on tests I could run while I've got her booted up please let me know. I had the ssd connected, I'm in windows about to give memtest a shot

if you are looking to change board if you've determined it is that , then check here first you could get one cheaper than 1K just have to be on the look out.

Yeah I will have to. So the thing is. I got the pc to boot and work a few times now. What I also checked was how the pc was running. Both with and without the gpu the pc was running just perfectly. And when it wouldn't boot, just swapping the ram into another slot was letting it boot again. Could this be a power supply issue? I'm so hoping that it's the power supply, it's so much simpler to just get a different power supply then to get a motherboard

Only way to rule it out is by testing with another PSU

I actually have an itx case somewhere with a power adapter board thingy in it. I got this motherboard in that little case. I'll just unplug my gpu and see if I can get it to boot in its original form. You think that could tell me if it's the mobo or Psu?

Might sound stupid to ask but have you remembered to switch the display cable to the GPU out and not Mobo out when you slot the GPU? Also if you have a different display out check if it's not only the port that's broken, my DP stopped working recently, switched to DVI, works fine.

Also depending on where you're based I might be able to help out with troubleshooting components.

Hey man thanks for the sweet info and the offer for help. I did remember to switch and try different output cables and slots. I went through all those possible solutions hoping to find a solution that wasn't going to cost me an arm and a leg. But I'm actually pleased to say that I've found the issue. Will post it here shortly so if anyone finds themselves in this issue they could hopefully find this useful to help them get their systems working again

SOLVED!

Issue:
So the "symptoms" of my pc was that the pc are as follows.
I had no trouble at all with my pc prior to this problem suggesting there was an issue with my hardware or anything. One morning it just refused to display anything. The pc would turn on but my monitor would not pick up any form of signal.

After a bunch of tests of the monitor, cables, cmos reset, boot drives, etc, I managed to get the pc to boot a few times by removing ram sticks and putting them back in (single channel constantly swapping the slot between boots as it was giving the highest chance of outputting video). On the lucky boots I got I tested the ram with windows memory diagnostic tool as well as memtest as suggested by another carbide user here but got no errors. At this point I wasnt suspicious that it was the ram anymore but rather my motherboard or cpu. I then tried to get another boot so that I could really put it under load to see if it would work and the pc worked just fine. I felt like this couldn't be a cpu issue or I would have gotten crashing of some sort. So I now had the highest suspicion of either the motherboard or the power supply

Solution:
I then plugged in another working power supply I had, to test whether or not it would boot and I decided to go balls to the wall with this test. So I reconnected the drives and both ram sticks. The pc is booting just fine, there's no issues, she's running just as she did before. I found it very strange how it didn't give any real signals to the power supply accept the fact that I knew it was very old.

The most common cause for no display output I believe is ram sticks, monitor or cables but in this case it was the power supply.

I hope no one else has to have this issue but if you do then I hope this can help you!

Great stuff. Now get a proper case before I die of Anxiety waiting for you to make a post about how a static shock popped your psu and then everything else.
