Up for sale is the brilliant and rare Sony TA-ZH1ES desktop DAC / amp, often affectionately referred to as "Tazzy". A few years ago as part of Sony's 70th anniversary they release a set of signature products, of which this was one.
It is crammed with brilliant technology, and at its heart is the latest version of the Sony's S-Master digital amplification circuit. It can process incoming digital signals directly, while using an analogue amplifier to correct any distortion caused by the digital section.
This is all masterfully controlled using a high capacity FPGA and allows for a wide range of processing functions, including DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) HX, DSD Remastering, and DC Phase Linearizer. The TA-ZH1ES can handle PCM files to 32-bit/768kHz and up to DSD 22.4MHz. There are three digital inputs – USB Type B, optical and coax – as well as a micro USB on the side (marked Walkman), and a single-ended analogue input option. Outputs include single-ended 3.5mm and 6.3mm, balanced 4.4mm, balanced dual 3.5mm, and a balanced XLR4; there is also a pair of stereo RCAs (with a setting to toggle between fixed and variable output).
A remote can be used to control all aspects of the TA-ZH1ES, which can be used as a full-function preamp as well as a conventional line-level DAC and headphone amplifier. Works beautifully with both IEMs and full size headphones. Build quality is impeccable - made of aluminium and steel, rigidly braced and structurally tuned to minimise resonances.
You can find a review here and product page with a lot of detailed info at Moon Audio here. These are hard to come by these days, and even more rare to find in a 220V version. New the Tazzy costs approx. $2k before shipping and duties (which is costly given it's weight).
