I had some more time again today to run some numbers regarding the selection of GPU's and other parts (PSU which is one one of the most critical aspects).

I also had numerous requests during the week to change or update something on my previous sheet... thus this time around I'm making my calcs available to all. It should at least give you some idea of what to look at when doing evaluations, and if the parameters are not important to you, just set them equal to zero.

What I did find interesting is that the Nvidia cards (1070, 1080 even 1080ti) did a lot better than I thought, and the 470/580 worse. Just because I took into consideration the mining machine capital and maintenance costs....

Any case, it makes for some real food for thought. Just remember, as a lot of you also correctly stated: the calcs are based on the assumptions, if you change that, you'll most likely get other results.

May I please just ask that if you find calc errors, please let me know.

think this is a error
say you have it on 24/7
electricity for my house is 1.455/kW
card will use 0.16kW/H, cost is R0.2328 /H, a day cost R5.59
Rate-cost= profit
R25.90- R5.59= R20.31 (Profit)
R3 698/ R20.31= 182.07 Days (Break even)
365days - 182.07 Days= 182 days (remaining year)
182 days * R20.31 = R3715.15 (Profit after a year)

No error, just assumptions.

Just changing the admin, internet and maintenance cost as well as room rent to zero and then changing depreciation from 200% (6 months) to 50% (2 years), will give you the following picture. It is important that you consider all the assumptions in the sheet; as it will impact your profitability at the end of the day....

yes totally agree, all these are calculations as things can happen anytime
But logically think about the Rx 480s in the first post
View attachment 65172
it will take 1000 days to break even for rx480 4gb, and more than 2 years for rx 480 8gb(actually 110+- days)?
and also, it will take a month to break even with a 1080 ti? (@HNO3, we know your plan:p)

Very sorry but i think the math is all wrong here honestly.

1080ti paid of in 29 days???? So 3 cards with an average will generate roughly $13.93 x 29 days that you say it will take. = $401.

current Rate 1 US Dollar equals = 13.42 South African Rand.

$401 x R13.42 = R5382.35

That doesnt even pay for 1 in the 29days you have stated. It will more likely 2 months minimum to pay off 1 card. this is good for an understanding of what each card can do in $ and the power drain, but the calculations dont seem right to me. It could also be to early on a sunday and im pulling this out my ass.

Also, I have an RX 570 that costs half that of the 1070 doing $3.20 as we speak and sitting at anything between 90 - 95W, the RX 470 is very similar to that from what I have read. And that will take me about 3 - 4 months to pay off. So some of those numbers are not spot on. But nice comparison none the less.

Hey man, if I may ask, what brand and model RX570 are you running?

If I'm understanding this difficulty change thing right, in 24 months they would expect you to reach your bottleneck and returns < power cost. After 6 months you are making less than 25% what you did in your first month. Not to mention ROI...

This is only looking at ETH mining, I know there are a lot of other currencies to mine, new currencies come out, miners change, but accounting for the variables you can and looking at historic difficulty increases, I'm having some difficulty understanding this story...?
