ARC is for getting the dvd/home theatre sound to be played on the TV.
You might be connecting it wrong.

I understood it that it just consolidated audio and video into 1 cable. Video input for the TV and sound output from the TV to the receiver. Hence, Audio Return Channel (ARC).

Did I misunderstand what it is? Possible I guess

Your understanding is correct, but how often do you really use dvd sound on the tv instead of your home theatre.
