Good day All,

I'm busy studying at a prominent business school and would like to know if anyone would be willing to help out with participating in an interview.

The candidates we (syndicate - aka group) are looking for are people who have migrated to other countries from South Africa or are in the process of migrating.
We're also looking for people who have migrated and since returned back to South Africa.

It would also be interesting to hear from people who have thought about migrating and ended up not migrating.

The idea is to find out about the factors why people have left or wanting to leave.

Quick overview of the interview process:
You'll get a consent form to fill in.
You'll receive the questions before the actual interview to help you prepare.
A Teams/Zoom/Google meet session will be setup with you for an online interview.

Please send me a PM if you're interested or willing to participate in this research.
It will help greatly if you can give me a quick overview of your migration standing.

I know a couple of people have migrated from Carb, so it would be really interesting to get some Carbonites' perspective.

As a side note: This may be your first time you could use the words "for research purposes" online with it really meaning it :D

Thank you!

Morning everyone. I just want to add, we only have a week to finalise the research.
So if anyone is willing, please send me a PM.

Feel free to tag Carbies you know who qualify for the research.
I won't message them, the onus is on them whether they want to participate.

To do the above in a week is a ridiculous requirement.
Also, birds and animals migrate. Not people. People emigrate.

Thank you. We're used to ridiculous requirements. It's part of doing a Masters.

I'd rather not have a semantics discussion, bud. We're researching the process of people moving from South Africa to another country, whether it be permanent or temporary.

All the best, hopefully my comments bumped your thread so can get what you need.

Edit: And it seems I schooled myself:
Human migration is the movement of people from one place to another with intentions of settling, permanently or temporarily, at a new location.

I'm happy to apologise for being wrong.
My apologies.

Funny enough I suppose that brings up a question. Do you mean long term or short term migration? Maybe both? Some folk plan to go for a few years as opposed to contemplating more permanent movement over.

Atleast he didn't talk about people immigrating from here.
[Insert Chief Inspector Dreyfus eye twitch here.]

Edit to add: amazing the number of couples who are doing stints where they're on different continents for months if not years sometimes.

Thanks. It's all of the above. It's a wide net being cast to look at the push and pull factors of migrating from South Africa. Whether it's short, long term or permanent.

It would also be interesting to note factors that have made it difficult to make the move, whether it's personal, red tape, and and blockers as well.

A growth mindset. Love it. Thank you.

If you "study at a prominent business school" how much are you paying us plebs to help you with your survey?

"The idea is to find out about the factors why people have left or wanting to leave."

If that is the objective and you just asked that here I am sure you get a whole bunch of answers for free fast, even shorter then a week, without people having to give their valuable time for mahalla in a cumbersome partaking. So here you go:

The main reason are most likely:

- The overall state of the country
- Corruption
- Crime
- Divide between rich and poor, - Poor government educational and health system
- Demographic and cultural differences

Overall, its pretty much a shitshow and the question is not if but when we leave. That part is mostly financial affordability with job security based and secondly papers based. Am sure others might ad their 2c.

One factor I have already looked at is limitations due to family circumstances some countries do not want people whose families might add a burden to their healthcare system. If you have a child with health issues that can restrict your choices even if you personally are perfectly healthy.

I think you summed it up quite nicely. Wife and I are Scotland bound in December.

Why does this feels like a trap set by sars?

Good points made by Dutchdog. The more interesting things are why people come back. When you go to a different country you learn alot about your current one.

Most likely an underestimate of the change involved and the impact it will have and I can speak from experience as I moved from the Netherlands to here, by myself.

That was alone. Leaving family behind. But having children already and leaving a possible support structure for children and their family/friends and the impact that has on them is not to be underestimated. It depends who is there where you going or how large and supportive of an expat community there is.

Secondly if you don't go with a lot of cash, its not going to be pretty or easy, moving to smaller place, no domestic, painter etc anymore.

Thank you everyone for the insightful discussion points. We've found enough people willing to participate in the interviews.
