Hey guys,

Need some advice or rather opinions:

I have two "rigs" specs as follows:

Desktop:

Alienware Aurora R4
i7 4930k
16gb RAM DDR 3 1333mhz
256gb SSD
Geforce 780 TI

Laptop:

MSI GT70 2OD
i7 4700M
16gb RAM DDR 3 1600mhz
3 x 64 GB SSD RAID + 120 GB SSD Storage
Geforce 780M

These rigs are very similar spec'd, and are sufficient enough to run the games I play (CSGO, Diablo 3).

My question is and rather advice I need; I would like to sell one rig. Do I sell the laptop and give up the freedom to play when I travel or sell the desktop and run my screen, keyboard off the laptop when I am at home. Other question would be, would my screen run at 120HZ if I am using the DP cable to my laptop.

Thanks in advanced :D you guys always have rad ideas. So let me hear them.

What do you want to play? CSGO or high end games? If it's CSGO, why bother? If it's high end games, get a 1070 after selling the laptop.

Laptop gaming doesn't work well.

Can confirm as someone who sold their desktop and became a laptop warrior, "Laptop gaming doesn't work well." :)

I ended up selling the laptop again and went back to a desktop build, sure the freedom of a laptop is nice, but if its just for checking emails, browsing etc, you soon realize how pointless it is actually. (I had an alienware with a 960m for context, on which I played CS:GO/GTA V) you don't realize how nice a desktop setup is until you don't have one.

Perhaps sell the laptop, upgrade the GPU, even too a nice 6gb 1060 and get yourself a cheapish 10" tablet... then you could atleast still play candy crush when you travel to get your gaming fix :)

Couple of valid points. Thanks for the input.
JollyJamma I only play CSGO/Diablo 3 most of the time. My idea was to basically replace the tower in my desktop setup with my laptop, still playing on an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

The laptop is currently just lying there. Not being used, only when I travel do I use it.

If my BENQ screen runs at 120Hz, won't it be the same thing then, or will there be other laptop drawbacks?

TIA

Meh i'd dump the desktop if you can't see your performance requirements increase in the foreseeable future then

Exactly what I was thinking...

I'd probably get more for the desktop and it will probably be an easier sell.

Don't get me wrong, laptop would probably sell for more, just given your setup you'd still have the desktop feel and portability when needed - at the cost of upgradeability

How do you consider that laptop portable? I mean yes it's a laptop but one that's gonna eat more juice and want a cable to feed from pretty quick. And then you've got an inferior keyboard in a hot (not in the figurative sense) little box VS a desktop that's still got some legs (in the figurative sense).

Definitely sell the laptop.

Its inevitably losing value each day, whereas with the desktop you definitely still have some decent mileage with your specs - although undeniably your upgrade path is practically at its end - and it probably wouldn't fetch as good a resale value as the laptop.

If the laptop was an Alienware I would say sell the desktop because most of their laptops are essentially desktop replacements. But even though the MSI can be considered a gaming laptop, it is ageing now and might not stand up to newer games, should you decide to start playing them.

So I agree you should sell the laptop and the GPU in your Alienware and upgrade to a 1060. You may even have some cash left over for a second hand laptop you can take on the road to use for emails and the web. Hell, you may even be able to find one powerful enough to play D3 and CSGO on, as as they aren't very resource intensive.

Cheers :)

Sell both and then buy a better laptop or build a better desktop

You have both there, so pack up the desktop and run with only the laptop (on your desk) for a week and see how it goes.
Then switch and compare.
