So I recently found out my ISP is being dishonest about their fibre service offering.
Turns out that the fibre in our complex only extends to the entrance gate. From that point onward our provider uses wireless towers to transfer the data to another site.
This to my mind means that the ISP is effectively a WISP. All my packet loss and inconsistent ping is probably due to this.
The worst part about this is that Openserve has a fibre footprint in the area. The street leading up to the complex offers fibre through Openserve.
The ISP also operates on the Openserve network so hypothetically they should be able to hook into Openserve and offer true fibre, but no we get some wireless alternative.
Here is the kicker. I'm paying R1299pm for a 100/100 line on this faux fibre setup. The people living in my street who choose to use my ISP with Openserve, will get a 100/50mb true fibre connection for R999.
This must surely be false advertising. I can't connect a fibre line to a dial up modem and call it fibre can I?
