So I recently found out my ISP is being dishonest about their fibre service offering.

Turns out that the fibre in our complex only extends to the entrance gate. From that point onward our provider uses wireless towers to transfer the data to another site.
This to my mind means that the ISP is effectively a WISP. All my packet loss and inconsistent ping is probably due to this.
The worst part about this is that Openserve has a fibre footprint in the area. The street leading up to the complex offers fibre through Openserve.
The ISP also operates on the Openserve network so hypothetically they should be able to hook into Openserve and offer true fibre, but no we get some wireless alternative.
Here is the kicker. I'm paying R1299pm for a 100/100 line on this faux fibre setup. The people living in my street who choose to use my ISP with Openserve, will get a 100/50mb true fibre connection for R999.

This must surely be false advertising. I can't connect a fibre line to a dial up modem and call it fibre can I?

colloquially called an AirFibre connection and yes, they are generally quite a bit more than traditional fibre but for gaming its a no,no. No matter how good the radios they using, PL will always be a thing when gaming over it.

from a marketing perspective, they are not really false advertising. if you have a physical fibre line from your house to the entrance of the gate....they are not really lying...just not disclosing the extent to where the physical line ends...

Yes, technically they aren't lying, but it's so deceitful.

So they can't pull a line to your unit? I wish providers would stop using wireless tech, it's just not stable enough. Have you checked other ISPs if they can pull a line for you? Afrihost got me sorted quickly. Not in a complex but it is another flat off the main house though, which now has its own separate line too.

Crisp fibre is utter shit tbh
I had huge fights with them
I had a really rocky start with them. Was paying for a 100/100 but was capping out at like 40mb/s and during peak hours it was hitting 1mb/s.
Moved to Rain 5G, but there are too many trees in the area and it was a worse experience. Eventually Crisp sorted out the issues and speeds for the last while have been really good, just been having packet loss issues and in trying to get that sorted I found out that the connection was wireless.

I'm like 100m from the gate. I don't think it will be feasible for anyone to pull fibre through to me.

Random question and maybe solution. Have you moaned about the issue and posted what you found out about it to your "complex group" WhatsApp or otherwise. Might be possible to argue that a change of provider or to make them actually attach to a fiber line outside the complex if there is push for it from more than just you.

Just to clear some myths , Here is a basic CTS test on a fiber line running from a main exchange in celtisdal to Heuwilsig estate on a telkom infrastructure .

With a 32:1 splitter getting a total loss of under 20DB , also at nearly 10KM . This line currently is setup for a 100/100 setup and has no issues what so ever .

The Max distance is purely based off of the equipment used at the exchange .

So the reason places like blue sky . wirulink , elite fiber all use hybrid networks , such as mixed fiber to a point and wireless further or visa versa . Is Just a cost saving measure .
