Just a note:
Tested on my dad's Samsung and even without ARC, the CEC for volume adjustment worked via the TV remote with the speaker plugging into the AUX out. Didn't test with optical, but I think as long as the TV knows to route the TV sound through that channel the volume adjust on the TV remote should still work.
