I've watched a number of vids on the new XBOX Series X|S Controller to find out whether there were any real changes and most places indicate the controller is pretty much the same which is true except it's not.

Sure people will be quick to point out the new share button and that the grips and trigger are now textured plus the redesign on the d-pad, however having just held a new controller for all of 5 minutes I can tell you that they're idiots if that's all they noticed.

First of all let's return to the D-pad quickly, that redesign is major. I'd go so far as to say that it is now the best D-pad on any controller, this includes being better than the Elite Series 2 and the Wolverine Ultimate. And this means that if you are into dabbling in fighting games this controller is now king (at least if you are using a conventional controller)

Second the back, so the triggers and bumpers have been redesigned too. Obviously they're textured now but beyond that rather than being a continuous piece of flowing plastic there's now a more defined little canyon between bumper and trigger, a great place for your finger to rest for games where you frequently need to articulate the one or the other. The trigger also features another change in that the bottom "horn" has been smoothed out just a little bit more making it a much more comfortable place for your finger to be than before.

And finally though the weight remains pretty much the same the distribution of it does not as the controller feels more balanced now with the weight more pronounced in the grips making it more satisfying to hold, textures aside.

I could also swear it's just the tiniest bit less tall but that may be an illusion formed by all the other factors when holding the old and new controller in either hand.

Literally the only thing I'd say was identical was the feel of the face buttons.

The bottom line is though that this feels like a superior controller, perhaps not superior enough to warrant an upgrade for those with still relatively new XBOX OneX Controllers but for those with aging controllers and/or who had been looking at getting a new controller anyways this is definitely the way to go. No need to consider the older controller anymore unless getting one on a clearance sale as they are priced the same. I would even choose this new controller over the Elite Series 2 due to the changes to the trigger and D-pad. Even those with original Elite controllers like mine can consider this an upgrade unless they have fallen in love with the alternative sticks and additional rear paddles of the Elite series.

For anyone still using the old 360 controller a new Series X|S controller will feel like they just splashed on a seriously premium controller offering significant improvements in every aspect. (Kind of like launch controller VS Elite, except the 360 controller is even more inferior than that comparison, or DS1 VS DS4)

(Disclaimer, I don't have an Elite Series 2 but I have the original (with nicely worn Silicone superglued back in place) and the Wolverine Ultimate and am very aware of the changes the Elite Series 2 makes VS the original Elite)

Nice writeup. I was on here looking for a second XB One controller, but will rather get the new Series controller now. Another nice feature is that it now also uses a USB-C connector and from what I could tell it is also compatible with the original win 10 wireless dongle.

Now I suppose the only question is whether I should go with black or white... (or blue)

The blue isn't just blue though, it's dual-tone with white on the bottom. Still looks really nice though.

I've heard that compatibility on PC is hit or miss but thats to be expected.

Will stick with my Xbox One controller for now (one of the special editions that already has textured triggers and rubber grips) but will move to this new one eventually once they also make a special edition with rubber grips.

Hadn't heard that or had trouble with that but that will obviously get smoothed out as you said

The F you two geniuses up to in my thread?

Nice write up!

I've been thinking about writing something on the same topic, but I have slightly different opinions.

Under the hood, it is a better controller, the Xbox team wrote up a nice article explaining some differences like how the input latency went from 8ms to as low as 2ms in the new controller

I really like the tech in the new controller, but the controller itself disappointed me for 2 things:
1: The new D-Pad clicks are really loud. Noticeably louder than the Xbox One controllers
2: The "textured grips" feels a bit too rough. I understand the idea of the controller not slipping and stuff, but I prefer some of the Xbox One special edition controllers that have a smooth feel. Or better yet, Microsoft themselves have made Xbox One controllers with rubberized backs (https://compass-ssl.xbox.com/assets...ead49a3.jpg?n=7436432_Gallery_1056x594_03.jpg
) which feel much much better.

I'm stuck in a crossroads where I like the new controller's tech but prefer the old controller's feel.

It is nosier yeah but since that translates to very clear and crisp 8-way input, the very reason why it's so damn good, I still feel it's worth it.

Fair enough on the grips too but for me coming from a glued original Elite controller I'd much rather textured plastic than something which might end me back with the same debacle plaguing my Elite. Then again the Wolverine is rubberized too and I don't expect it to end up like the Elite so it is possible to do rubberized well, however since Razer seem to do it better than most (Viper rubberising VS Steelseries Rival 600 for instance) I'm not quite ready to give MS the benefit of the doubt yet on using rubber.

They are good points, and I definitely like the feel of the D-Pad, just not how loud it is.
And I can completely understand on the rubber grips. I haven't personally had issues with the elite controllers I had or the sports controller, but I've seen enough people complain to know that it's real. If MS would just open up Design Labs for the new Series controllers, I guess we can have the best of both worlds

I absolutely adore my Shock Blue Series X controller.
It's vastly superior to the previous One X V2 controllers. Definitely a step up in terms of build quality and overall feel.
Just a pity we're paying R1500 for something that retails for $59.99.

It was 1400 at Incredible but yeah. The old controller costs the same though so the ripoff is no different. And it's a bit better than the 3-4 grand for the Elite series 2.

I'm very happy with the purchase.
I see them going for as low as $40 in the US...hurts my soul lol

Well worth the money if you use a controller and looking for something that is and will be widely supported.
