So i think its time for a mandatory PSU replacement as my trusty old HX750 has been through a few systems now and is quite old now (5 - 6 years old maybe even more).

Which of the the 2 replacements would you guys recommend. Not too worried about the difference between 80 plus gold and platinum as the efficiency differences are so small. Not going Corsair this time as their pricing seems overpriced in comparison to well known brands.

The options:

1. Fractal Design FD-PSU-IONP-860P-BK Ion+ 860W 80 Plus Platinum Certified Fully Modular Desktop Power Supply - Wootware
2. Super Flower SF-850F14HG(BK) Leadex III Gold 850W 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular Black Desktop Power Supply - Wootware

Thanks in advance.

They are all very good units, the fractal has 10 year warranty vs the 5 years of the super flower.

If you can stretch the budget also look at this one
Dont mind stretching the budget however it is more expensive and a 100watts less. Is there an argument for it over the above options?

See these

But woots non reponse to customer queries is worrying

I have no idea, I use a RM750x, just saw its in stock with supplier and the other units are not hence the recommendation.
Other than that it had excellent performance back when I cheked reviews.

You guys replace PSU's after a certain time ? Wait this is new to me. Should I replace mine since its a bit old?

Haha yes I'm well aware of @Oj0 service. I have purchased from him before.

Will check your site and give you a pm soon bud. Is the site the most accurate for stocking or should I pm you?

Thanks for that bud, will add it to the list.

I always find reading PSU reviews daunting as its something I just don't understand too well.

My Corsair bronze TX850 is 10 years old now. No issues so far - *knocks on wood*. Unless you've been hammering the PSU with load on a daily basis, is there really a need to replace it?

I`d rather be safe then have it take my system with it. I'm sure capacitors degrade over time as well as other components in there.

6 - 7 years of usage is a long time in my opinion.

If it is a good quality PSU it should last you a long time.
I bought a antec quattro true power 850 in 2010 I think, I only replaced the thing because it had a tiny little fan that made irritating noise. (wel and due to the ugly cables XD)
But after that I still mined with the thing and later sold it.
Ill just not want to use a PSU with these cheapo caps in them for more than a couple of years, its ok if they put them in the primary but still, I will sleep better knowing the whole unit uses only high temp good quality Japanese caps, nevermind having built in over current protection etc. Dont trust cheap stuff to protect my system.

My HX1000i is 7 years next month, paid R4500 at rebeltech.
Had a look now they are going for R8K+, going to be a pricey when I need to change.

Wasting your money upgrading, that unit is good if you dont push your psu to its max output on a daily there is no reason to upgrade it due to being afraid it may fail on you.

You think I'm wasting my time upgrading it? I don't even remember how old it is anymore I just know at a minimum its 6 years old and it came with a 7 year warranty back then.
Yes, I can't see the reason for replacing a PSU of that quality given that there are no moving parts and you have had zero issues.

I know that you don't know a PSU is faulty until it pops but I'd highly doubt that an HX series would pop anytime soon.

I still have an RMI series that's going strong in my moms computer, 5+ years later after it was first bought by someone else on this forum.

He will have an older model than that revision but it's still a good PSU.

It's not necessary for quality psu, you can do a cursory visual inspection of the psu and see if any of the parts have obvious problems such as bulging capacitors or rust/corrosion.
