Item Wanted: Portable air conditioner
Packaging Essential: Not really, no, accessories is a must
Desired Age: 3 years or youngers
Location: Pretoria/Sandton
Willing to accept a shipped item: Nope, too heavy
Ballpark/Budget Amount: Around R1.5k~R2.5k.

I'm looking for a portable aircon. Split unit isn't an option where we're staying right now and the heat isn't working for me or my pregnant wife anymore (main reason), so we need something to just break the worst heat on the hottest of days. Looking at 12,000 BTU+, but I'll consider any sizes depending on the cost. I'm not a big brand fanboy, although it does play a factor in the price. Black Friday is upon us, but I know someone somewhere must have a random one lying around that they can swing for a good price.

Hey man, the heat has been bad of late. We have a fan in the room makes a massive difference already drops temp by 2-3 degs. But I'm also looking into something similar. You have any experience with air coolers as opposed to aircons?

Not stealing your post just asking if you know anything about the aircoolers :)

Evaporative air coolers are a waste of space and money

Fans right now just move the hot air around. We hit 39 degrees at home the other day - and my wife almost passed out from the heat already. Can't let that happen again.

Regarding evaporative coolers - they work really well in DRY conditions. As you probably know, South Africa (well, Pretoria and JHB anyway) doesn't have dry heat. We have humid heat, so those coolers provide cool air, but actually increase the felt temperature as your own natural evaporation gets worse.

Do you have something like Isotherm in the roof ? From what I read it also help dropping the temps by a couple of degrees. In this heat every little bit helps.

Think might be a costly excersise if you do the whole house at once, its like R500 or something for a 5m x 1.2m roll.

Retailwise,i've had my best luck at Game and Hifi corp. They generally don't advertise or have it listed online but they have the cheapest ones usually

Yep. Insulation in the roof is good, but it doesn't solve the sun whacking the house from every angle. It's a new area, so no big trees and no shade. It's also not my house, which is also the reason I don't want to spend money on permanent solutions (like a split unit AC or tinting on the windows or shade nets everywhere).

Best price I can find now is at Foto Discount World. They got Defys for a real steal, but I want to see if I can get even cheaper second hand.

Bump! Getting a portable to test out in a day or two, second-hand, but it's not a definite thing.

Got one to test today. Will see how it holds up.

Will do! It's a secondhand unit so it might not be in the best condition when it comes to working, but I'll let you guys know!

Might require a service/regas... let me know if you need one and i can put you in touch with someone

You got my number! It's a Russell Hobbs, and the service centre is not too far, but other people might not be a bad idea to check out.

PS from experience, the service and parts costs from Russell Hobbs actually isn't too bad at all.

check it out first and let me know.. if the temps arent that great i will ask him to contact you about it

So , how is it ? Seeing as we are in another heat wave. ~36 today :(

I'm going to return it. I don't think second-hand is the way to go anymore. This one is in OK condition and the oke doesn't want a lot, but it's lacking that "cold" air that we want. It dehumidifies like a charm though and yesterday I filled up the water tank in 2 hours. Then you have to move it somewhere, keeping it upright to prevent the water from sloshing out and drain it before it'll work again. For the time it ran in the bedroom it really made a difference, but it's just not enough. I need more cold for the larger living room space.

How effective and noisy is this unit or units similar to this?
I got an old Russell Hobbs unit now. It's obviously older, that's true, so it does have a little bit of a tick and rattle here and there, but man this thing makes lekker noise. Can't even hear my white noise generator over it, and I have to talk a bit louder if it's running in the room. It's not a bad noise though, it's something I can really sleep through. You can just get a bit of a jolt when it switches on and off, because it goes "CLACK" and then just a quiet swoosh of the fan.

Thanks man. It's pretty "meh" though. I can get Defy 12,000 BTU from a reputable dealer close to my place for around R4,600, and that's with a 2-year warranty. That's my measuring number right now.

I have one of those elegance units 12000btu that I had bought for my son - he doesn't use it much,
He enjoys the open sliding door and fan 😒. It's probably been used 4 times at the most, still in new condition,
You are more than welcome to come and put it to test,
I have split units in other rooms, so no need for this
