My logitech G19 died on me so I am on the lookout for a new keyboard

Didn't like the split power
screen was a nice gimmick but ultimately only ever used it for 2 games so don't think the hassle is worth it
Liked customizing backlight

So please help me pick a new keyboard

Might consider mechanical
needs to be backlit

So what you guys and girls think?

Thing is, mech keyboards under R1k is hard to come by, and the rest are pretty much all the same. Get a Logitech/Steelseries/w/e and you're set.

If you're going to go mechanical then take the time to try out the different switches. I went from Red to Blue to Brown - could have saved myself a lot of money and time if I'd had a chance to try the browns at the start.

Nothing to recommend.
I have the Corsair K30 and I would not recommend that.
It is too expensive for what it is now. It is a R400-600 keyboard and not 800 or more.
Anti-ghosting is decent (Quick brown fox and all that). The red backlight is good. Standard multimedia and macro keys.
The raised keys are where it makes or breaks the package. Great for cleaning. But the longer travel time makes gaming feel a bit heavy handed, ironically like a dirty keyboard.

As mentioned above, If it's worth the price tag, I will pay more :)

Some friends have suggested the corsair k65,k70 and the strafe. What do you guys think of those?

A dude here at the office has a Strafe. One with the soft-touch keys, the RGB one. Good grief it's an amazing keyboard, but goes for ~R1,900...

Just to add some here, Roccat

Roccat has a reputation like Razer... They will only last as long as their warranty. And if I'm going to be spending a small fortune then it better last a few years :p

NOOB question
what exactly is the difference between the mechanical switches?
the only thing that made a huge difference for me was the responsiveness that mechanical keyboards have compared to membrane keyboards...

Good question in my opinion :p. Hope someone can answer

Red = Fast
Blue = Loud (oldschool mechanical before gaming keyboards were a thing. If you hear the sound in your head this is probably the one you are thinking of)
Black = Heavy
Brown = Middle of the road = Most popular choice

That is my summation after doing some research.

I don't understand why they are different though. I thought they just emit different colours

They do not emit anything. They have no cosmetic benefit of any kind.
They account for texture and noise differences.

Oh wow. So a cherry mx blue could be in a red backlit keyboard?

Absolutely. While the switches themselves are various colours eg Cherry MX Blue is actually blue, they are completely hidden by the key caps and the lighting comes from LEDs in the keyboard.

I can absolutely recommend the K70 Rapidfire RGB - while the price is quite a bit higher than your budget it's certainly a worthwhile purchase that will last you many years.

Durability? I Just rage bashed my Deathstalker Chroma so now the keys feels iffy. 1 month old 2K keyboard fucked...

I recently got myself the Corsair Strafe RGB. Damn pricey but it's the best keyboard I've ever used and the RGB customization is out of this world brilliant. Definitely not money wasted

Th difference in speed between the different colour switches is pretty subjective, but there are some fundamental physical differences.

Reds have no click; it's just a clean, smooth travel from top to bottom. The resistance doesn't change from when you first start pressing the key all the way until switch contact is made. They feel faster because of this smooth, all or nothing motion.
To me they felt vague though, and actually "slower" than the others. I tend to press keys down slowly just before I need to, and not knowing when the keypress would be registered was a problem.

Blues are the opposite. There's a slight increase in resistance just before the switch makes contact. Keep pressing and a fairly loud click with a sudden drop in resistance tells you contact is made. There's a bit more travel in the key after that but it doesn't count for anything. You get another click on release as the switch pops back up to meet the underside of the key cap.
I just found them to be too loud. The other issue is if you're holding a key flat down and release slightly, it doesn't break contact. You have to release about 1/3 of the key travel before the switch pops up. Bad for gaming, especially FPS.

Browns are sort of in the middle. You get that slight increase in resistance like blue, but as you push past it and the resistance drops back to normal, you still have to press a tiny bit further to make contact. Kinda like reds with a bump to tell you where you are. If you release even slightly then they disengage immediately. Perfect.

I don't know enough to comment on spring resistance or overall travel distance, apart from black switches basically being heavier sprung versions of Reds.

Here are some gifs to help you picture my descriptions :)
