I am looking to expand my Unraid NAS server but I have run out of SATA ports on the board.
I've been doing some reading and following this article. They recommend a PCIe-based SAS HBA card (SAS2008 chipset) and splitter cables for the best reliability.

Don't use PCIe SATA cards with Unraid, use a cheap HBA
I don't recommend using PCIe SATA expansion cards with Unraid. A cheap HBA will give you everything you need without any issues.
