So i decided to go with a larger build recently so I decided to get myself another Mobo along with it. Stupid me forgot to get a mobo that has DDL (Dolby Digital Live) Support so i can play my games in 5.1 through the optical connection. So im stuck using stereo :( However I hear that if you use the HDMI from your GPU you can get 5.1 through your surround sound system anyway... But Im confused... Do you not need a receiver to use that function? I've got an LG Blu ray surround sound system with HDMI out only... Will this work? Or do i have to get a receiver? (Receivers be expensive, so id rather get another board)

Please Wizzards help me a fella out?

You're looking for HDMI pass-through. The box will have an HDMI in AND and HDMI out. It would grab the audio signal to process and play, and then pass on the video to the next device in the chain.

Many modern blu-ray all-in-one boxes will work as receivers, decoding and playing a 5.1 signal. Take stock of what digital inputs your LG has and what digital outputs your mobo/gpu have and see if there's a match somewhere.
What is the model number of the LG?

It's the BH6220S bud:

LG BH6220S 850W 5.1Ch 3D Blu-Ray Disc Playback with LG Smart TV

It doesn't have HDMI in :( only out...

I sold a sound card on here not too long ago for ~R500 IIRC. Had tons of outputs including optical out. Many of them have it, look around!

I think DLNA over the erthnet is capable of doing what you need; I see the LG system supports DLNA and has a erthnet port.
You may have to hunt to find a program to stream all windows sounds / game sounds via DLNA. A quick google reveals: StreamWhatYouHear.com ,never tried it though, so you may have to do more hunting.

What about these analog surround units? Incase I cant find a card? The Logitech Z506 looks nice but how does it work?

Three stereo 3.5mm cables from your motherboard to the speaker box; one handles front stereo, one for rear stereo, one for centre channel and sub. Plug & play :)
Works very well and is generally supported natively without having to install the mobo's (usually) crap audio software.

My Z97 Sniper has a creative card onboard with 115db s/n ratio with a high-amp... I think i will consider going this route. I know most games dont support dolby like far cry4 and watch dogs etc... so maybe analog might be better... anyway. Ill let you guys know of my findings :)

Thanks guys for the help :)

Doesn't that board have an optical output?

Edit - checking compatibility...

Another thought, that may be easier than DLNA, is that some monitors have an audio optical output. Have you looked behind yours recently?

As far as I can tell they both support Dolby DTS. See if there's somewhere you can switch Dolby modes in the Sniper's software.

the sound card in the z97 sniper is the creative core 3d.. According to the Creative website none of the core3d sound cards support it :/ only the dedicated ones...

That just seems crazy for such a high end board.

Ok, maybe analogue is the way to go. That board's audio processing is probably better/cleaner/faster than the LG's anyway :)

Asus Xonar should be able to sort you out? they are around the R500 mark ? I know mine had a optical out ?

What mobo are you using and what speakers....Z506 works much like z5500s just without all its bells and whistles .Think Z5500 has dual chips inside ,one for DAC and ADC .FYI I'm running on board Sound on my Z97 mpower with SPDIF currently on my z5500 and yes I get dolby and dts on either...tried it on ps4 works too.
