Hello Carbies

Does anyone know where I can find a NVME to 4 X Sata converter in-store? Trying to keep away from aliexpress, temp & Bob.

I switched out 4 X HDDs to SSDs and would like to reuse these HDDs in a NUC.

NUC currently only has 1 x NVMe and 1 X Sata. If I expand the NVMe to 4 x sata should be fine? Power to the drives is not an issue as I have a power supply for them.

Why not just get an external housing for the 4 drives?
Would that not just e simpler?

Also i don't know if you get what you looking for. I have seen 2.5 to nvme adapters but not what you are looking for.
I think you might be trying to reinvent the wheel. Just my 2c worth

Some helpful vids for this. I also haven't seen seen an NVME to SATA but NGFF to SATA is possible (second vid - more for what would be the "Wifi M.2")

Hope these help.

First vid, Hardware Haven building a JBOD - I'm sure you can find the HBA adapter to NVME on aliexpress or such.
Second vid, a bunch of random M.2 adapters that can add more usage to your PC - Mostly networking stuff but he does cover a few SATA type adapters.

Yeah was also wondering if there isn't some other slot / expansion card one could use instead of looking for something a bit rare.

I stand corrected.
However you need to work out if this would actually work in the NUC. I would assume that there is a big change that it might not fit.

Also what is it going to look like with 4 sata cables running out of the NUC?

@Shamz This will work fine in an M.2 that supports NGFF but you need to check the QVL or support list (or if you have an M.2 currently and it has the same connector you are good to go)

People generally assume its all NVME whereas you do get different protocols for M.2 (the actual slot type) NGFF is a modern upgrade to SATA using the M.2 slot (think of the old school mini PCI SATA SSD's you found in a few laptop models a few years back)

This post also helps explain it better.

This is also what I found, This would fit perfect but if it would work in the NUC I have no idea yet, Still doing some research hence why I though to purchase at a local store inorder to test it. Looks of cables is not a big deal for me, this contraption will be hidden away.

Basically my thought was to drill a hole in the top cover and put a rubber grommet to avoid rough edges and run the cables.
I already have a cage for 4 HDDs.

The only reason for doing all this is put all these equipment to use else they will just collect dust.
A 4 Bay NAS would be great but comes at a lekker cost aswell.

I know for sure M.2 Sata is not supported. I tested it and can confirm this.
My WB Blue 570 NVMe works fine. Still trying to find proper specs for my HP ProDesk G3 Mini

@Shamz ok cool that does limit it down to directly NVME protocol on the M.2 slot. I haven't seen anything to do with NVME to SATA protocols at all (as far as I am aware they are also not cross compatible - something to do with how PCI-e interacts on the slot)

I personally don't think you are going to be able to run a SATA M.2 adapter on this (or anything other than a NVME SSD) on this slot. Even something like a U.2 will not work as U.2 as far as I am ware does require a slot that is wired for 12v power even though it uses basically the same type of connector. This unit however might work for you but not sure if it will be 100% compatible (firmware wise)

I see the M.2 Slot is M.2 2280/2230 M-key (PCIe x4) and that adaptor is a M Key

Yea that's why I say it should work. From a quick google search of your HP motherboard the only issue might be fitting the card in due to the height inside the case and then of course it will use up the space for the 2.5 inch above it but also depending on the exact specs of the HP there is normally either the built in expansion module (just next to the CPU cooler) that if you don't have installed or don't need, you can take it out to run the cabling out the back of the case similar to the Hardware Haven JBOD video above.

These "1 Litre" PC's are brilliant little pieces of equipment but when you need that extra oomph can be a pain to sort out (I know that just from a MT based HP, not even as small as your HP)

Alternatively, you can get "NVME Extension cables" and then run the entire JBOD setup externally and still have space for the internal 2.5 inch for boot and the wifi card next to the M.2 NVME

I think I am left with 2 options. My initial plan was to just purchase exclosures and use the drives as external drives.
I also found Orico and Vantec M.2 to 4 x Sata ports were users confirmed they do work.

I might just gamble on this one and try the M.2 to Sata.
Space is not a concern as will remove the existing drive bay so the cables sit in comfortable.
The only unfortunate part is the long wait period for delivery to find out if it would work

From my personal usage, Orico is a good brand to go for (of course not to say they are 100% perfect, I have had a few random usb cable issues with an enclosure or adapter hear and there over the years).

Vantec also have been in the game for many years (I think they have been around as long as I have been alive XD ) and from usage in the past I haven't had issues, nor have people I know had issues (again, excluding a random USB cable or something not working)

The only issue I would have is your machine not support B-Key SSD's (NGFF) but then again, it might just be a firmware issue on your end on that specific SSD you were testing with and you might have a system that can run them fine (based on this spec sheet https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05364047 )

Good luck with the build though, keen to see a cool crazy set up when you are done.

Thanks for all the help bud.

I think let me do a bit more digging and once all is complete I will share some pics.
For now I see delivery for parts for mid to late April so hopefully I am done by May.

@limadelta26
This is exactly what I was looking to do. The adapter has 6 Sata ports I see so there is room to expand later.
I see this guy has a few videos on how he set it up aswell which will come in handy.
Thank you very for the help.
I literally just ordered this adapter from the link you provided so no turning back now.

@Shamz fire and forget lol

Best of luck with it, at least it is amazon so shipping should be a bit better compared to aliexpress and those other ones. Woolfgang has some really good vids as well.
