Hi all,

I haven't built a custom pc in what is probably the last 10 years, but now with this whole working from home affair, I'm looking to build a decent developer machine that will allow me to bask in the glow of running multiple docker containers and developer IDE's, and at the same time having something I can use for gaming, which I'd be OK running 1080p at high frame rates to play the current games available at the moment.

With that all being said, I've been browsing what is available on the various online stores, and in a conundrum in terms of which CPU to base the build on.
My budget is probably around R20k max for the machine, and then possibly stretching it to R30k but that would include the monitors and everything.

Now that the Ryzen 5000's are out, if I start pricing a CPU/Mobo/RAM combo, I am seeing the following:

Ryzen 3600
ASRock B450 Steel Legend / G.Skill F4-3200C16D-32GVK Ripjaws V 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200MHz
From WootWare
This totals out being R8,817.00

However, comparing this to the upgrade bundles on EveTech, there are two options:

AMD RYZEN 5 5600X
Asus ROG Strix B550-F MB - AMD RYZEN 5 5600X CPU - KLEVV BOLT X 32GB 3200Mhz RAM
R 10,948.00

AMD RYZEN 9 3900
Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming MB - AMD RYZEN 9 3900 CPU (OEM) - KLEVV 32GB 2666Mhz RAM
R 11,848.00

My questions are:
1. There is a R2k difference between the 3600 and the 5600x - This to me says the 5600x is a better direction to go? But is that R2k better spent elsewhere on say the GPU?
2. If I went for the 5600x, then a 3900(not the x) bundle goes for R900 more than the 5600x. Is having more cores better, than the new tech in the 5600?
My gut feel here told me more cores are better - but after watching this review, I'm conflicted as to if the 5600x is actually better than the 3900?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.
We have many awesome resellers on the forum that will be able to give you some great deals.
Chat to @Oj0 and @Senshi

If you going to build new from scratch i would suggest going with the newer Ryzen 5000 series and a B550 motherboard.
You'll save some money with the B450 but in my opinion it's not worth it as you can get really decently priced B550 models.

5600x + B550, RTX 3070 (or used 1080ti if budget is a concern) plenty good enough. At 1080p 5600x is by far the best choice.
3900 hmmm depends how intense your workload or multitasking is 🤔

Hi,

Welcome to Carbonite. This is quite literally what I specialize in :)

www.performancepcs.co.za

Let me know if you are interested and I'd be happy to help with some pricing and advise.

I think you also need to be aware of where you are buying from. You are really going to get what you pay for.

That 3900 (non-x) is actually only available to pre-Built systems companies. The fact that it gets sold the way it does is a bit of a flag if you ask me. Also, do not by any means confuse the 3900 with the 3900x, especially when it kinda gets sold as if it is pretty much the same thing.

I would also not get anything less than 3200Mhz ram, especially not when the price diff is so small but that is just me.

this is a build I'm planning on buying, the best bang for buck in my opinion for 1440p or 4k gaming

GPU can be downgraded to a gtx 1660 super to bring the total just under R20k and give you a great 1080p experience

SSD can also be upgraded to the 1TB variant (like 600 bucks extra)

just some advice from a previous ryzen 5 3600 and 1660 super owner

Thanks all for the quick responses! Lots of replies so will try cover it all in this reply!
Some good tips already, and also will definitely explore assistance from you guys selling on the forum.

One of the minor annoyances with the EveTech stuff is with the upgrade bundles the motherboard options are limited ( non have onboard WIFI for example). It's tough in the sense that if you added up the bundle theres a good R4k of savings in that, but I hear you when you say you get what you pay for ) @dotnerd , thats a good point re: the 3900 vs 3900x - is this significant of a thing to make the 3900 not worth looking at?

Workload wise - I'm coming from doing all my work on a MacBook Pro 2015, which is a 2.5Gz Core i7, with an Intel Iris Pro 1536, and 16GB Ram.

Aside from the light memory (16gb) I never had an issue doing anything productive, albeit running a dev WildFly server plus a couple DB instances started to grind the machine.

Maybe another thought - Is it possible I'm overspending to a degree here, and could get away with a previous gen. build, at around R10k or will I just be disappointed in a couple months, and then spend even more money upgrading :)

A 10-15k should really do you wonders with something like a ryzen 5 3600 and GTX 1660 super, considering you're coming from a 2015 macbook the performance will be night and day

I'm currently running a 3600 with an X470 motherboard and I'm happy with the performance I'm getting. I mainly game on my machine and the only upgrade I'll be doing is to my gpu going with either a 3060ti or a 3070. I don't need it but CUD (you'll learn about that on the forum).

If you want to save some cash go with the 3600 cpu and a B550 board, this way you'll have the older gen cpu (which is no slouch btw) but newer gen board with pcie 4.0 etc. With a cpu upgrade path later on if you need it. The newer ryzen cpu's are blistering fast though.

Regarding ram as mentioned in an earlier post go for a minimum 16/32GB 3200mhz kit (2x8/16GB), 3600mhz ram speed is preferable but not a night and day difference that you will notice in my opinion.

Stay the **** away from evetech if you value after sales support and warranty, there are plenty of threads here and on mybroadband that delve into the horror stories. Only buy things from them that are highly durable and unlikely to break (ironically a cpu is one of those), have third party warranty support, or are cheap to replace.

I'm kinda new here so not sure if this post infringes on forum rules 😅
