Hi Guys

I just got a call from Mweb offering me a free FON router. (Free, no monthly costs etc.)

Does anyone know if they are any good and if they will affect my regular bandwidth?

Thanks

It's fairly decent, it's a Technicolor TG589VN v3. I ordered mine this morning :D Oh, it also comes with a range extender. I think it's an absolutely awesome initiative, near country-wide Wi-Fi would rock.

I posted a thread today on MyBB adsl forum today asking about adsl cos I've always been on MTN uncapped lite and one of my requests was that wifi is a must and this just sounds fantastic at the moment!

I signed up for the 5GB deal to get the router and extender. ;) They do state that they will come and collect it once you stop using the Mweb data (which I plan to as I'm on WA uncapped). Will have to see how it goes.

They just called me back. Router is network locked and they will not come and fetch it if you cancel.

(Sorry, not MWEB Guy) over at MBB says they WILL collect it if you don't use it, and that there will be a collection cost.

Very mixed messages. I got the guy to email me too. Will see if I can get something in writing.

Could someone post a follow up? I signed up for this damn thing to get the router, don't want to pay any additional costs above what I have to pay for the cap. Chances are I will be cancelling soon.

Also got the call from Mweb now...

Obviously I said yes I mean it is "free" but I want to know does this affect my normal 4mb line speed at all?

What is in it for me to loose? Surely there should be a catch somewhere?

RyanW12 did you get feedback from mweb yet? also interested to know if my line speed will be affected....

I'm also getting this but my one concern is from what I can understand is that other people can access your router if they have an mweb account through the wifi and mweb details(not sure about this but it seemed to be what the lady who offered me the router seemed to be saying). It's like they're trying to setup a massive wifi network using these routers

It won't effect your speeds, the hotspot will only get available bandwidth.

No, they can access a Wi-Fi hotspot. Much like with AlwaysOn and similar, it'll act as an internet gateway only.

Mine arrived today :D

Seen some random mail in my Junk Mail, was from Mweb offering me this free router/range extender doodad..
You had me at FREE so replied to the mail and one week later, that being today, hoot at the gate and its Fedex with a package.
Long story short, my FREE router is here - range extender is out of stock but is said to be coming soon.
Just bought a new router but hey, did I mention this one was FREE !! :p
Lets see what is what when I start jammin on it ..

I have set up the router, not a slight bit of hassle. Only problem is the extender does not seem to be doing what it is supposed to do. Does not seem to be pairing up with the router.

I had endless hassles with the extender. Eventually just logged into it and set it up manually.

IP 192.168.2.2, username is admin and password is 1234.

Gonna try that, but if it doesnt work I dont "need" the extender in any case :p

Me neither. Took me ages to figure out that they changed to default IP and what they changed it to. These guys really messed with the firmware on the router and extender.

Makes me a little concerned that there could be a back door or exploit that they could use the get in and fiddle remotely. Maybe I'm just paranoid.
