Ok, hope some one can give me some insight or imput here. Got my card yesterday, as usual I started with some strain testing to see if everything is up to scratch. Using MSI kombuster, 3dmark 11 and battlefield 3 most of the time. The temps for the normal MSI kombuster tests, 3dmark11 and battlefield all are in the range of 65-71, which is a tad hot, but can go. When I run MSI burn in test my temps suddenly skyrocket to the 90's (and I immediately stop it). I have the latest bios for the card, going to try out the 13.1 drivers later today, but I doubt it will fix the issue. Anybody with any tips? Advice? Airflow is fine, so that cant be the blame for the 90's... thanx

Did you buy the card new or 2nd hand?

If second-hand, check if it's been stripped and put under LN2 before - they might not have done a stellar job when re-fitting the stock cooler.

Also check that it hasn't been volt-modded / flashed with a bios giving it stupid amounts of voltage.

If new, someone messed up with the factory thermal paste - strip and re-apply proper paste - if it still does the same thing, RMA, because then it's a dud.

7970 lightnings can run pretty warm, but that's taking the mickey a bit.

Most cards run into the 90's while running Kombuster.
There is NO reason to test you're card with Kombuster.

65-71 is perfectly fine while benching and jamming BF3.

Thanx for the replies peeps! Card is a rma card, did check the bios, seems fine!

Atiboy what does your 7970's run in the burn in test if you don't mind me asking?

Anybody else that can maybe post their temps with 7970 in burn in test with msi kombuster? thanx

I agree with atiboy, some of those stress apps push cards way beyond what they will ever have to do in real world situation

I've tested my card gtx 580 with furmarks burn in tests and my temps go up to 72 but stays there the same goes for bf3 and bops2.
I know its 2 totally diff cards but if your card is fine while gaming then why stress. Also my card runs at 60-65 in any other season than summer. I don't know if you have air con in your room but I know Newcastle gets *** hot in summer.

Just my 2cents

Well in the 6 or 7 series amd started hard capping the max tdp as to prevent these overkill stress test apps, possibly with the lightning range msi has lifted that hard cap.

Thanx for the replies! So can I assume my card is within normal operating specs? also i started fiddling around with some oc's... I get 1190/1600 stable at 1.17v (stock), good? bad? average? thanx :)

Mine hits 55 degrees now on 3d11 so when it hotter prolly around 65 max what graphics score are u getting with urs?
thats a good clock for stock i got mine on 1150/1600 stable 1.181v, didnt feel like testing for more, lazy

in 3dmark 11 it does about 68-73 degrees... so i am a bit concerned, i feel it is a bit high, or higher then avarage! I get 12286 in 3dmark, with tassilation switched off! do you use the stock cooler? water? if you have a chance, could you please run furmark and just post your temps here! thanx a lot!

I remember my Lightnings in crossfire ran at high 70s for the Kombuster test.

I think it was the normal 3d tests, can't really remember. I would test it again but they are on water so the results won't be relevant to you.

Thanks. They could theoretically be even better because my pump isn't the strongest and everything is on one loop.

card is with i now.. idles at 30-35 and with the kombuster test it max out at 73 after like 10mins run.. I think though i have no previous xp with this card its all and all not too bad. In games it max out at 54

Will have a look.

Been in hospital till today, so will let you know tonight.

Bud, my Sapphire 7970 OC with stock clock - 1000/1450 idles around 40 deg... doesn't seem to go much higher than 45deg when gaming.

I have also had heat issues with my PC cos I've been oc'ing the sh!$ out of my i7-975 lol and haven't had the time to fiddle with the gfx card... yet :D

Nice.. I think my psu combined with the high ambient is screwing me over. PSU isn't strong enough...

Interesting, I reapplied thermal paste to cpu and most of my heat issues are gone.... also feel that my psu is struggling, mine is a 650watt :(

Hey Man I know how you feel but if you want you can fire up Afterburner and create a custom profile for the Lightening that way it will be silent when not in use when in medium use (bf3) relatively quiet and when you use a burn in wizard like kombustor it WILL sound like a hoover fired up in your chassis i have my MSI 7950 running @ 1000/1450 24/7 with a profile and gets too 62/63 deg C but yes your games dont pull 100/100 % but kombuster does..

I want a 7970 lighting!! :'(!!

Just checked mine. Reference 7970. With furmark burn in test I get 68deg with fan on 68%
Flagship cards should run around 85 under big load
