My phone contract is ending in August and I'm looking to just switch to a month to month or pay as you go.

I don't need much, +-2gb of data and maybe about 10-20mins of call time a month.

All I can find are packages that are way bigger or overpriced. Anyone have a deal they found?

Check out Afrihost's Airmobile. Happily been with them for years. On the MTN network, so good reception. I pay R109pm for 40min + 3GB. It's a month2month contract with Afrihost, and purchases pre-paid credit from MTN. Although mine is a legacy package, I'm sure the new ones are reasonable too.

I have been prepaid for 7+ years. Just buy the minutes and data as you need it. FNB tends to have decent prices on their fnb network data and minutes.

I've been on prepaid for about 5 years now I think.

I have Vodacom prepaid on my main SIM on the 79c/min plan. For you, that would be around R 16/month for calls.

The on my second SIM I use the MTN BozzaGigs 7.5GB+7.5GB option which is R 129/month.

But if you only need 2GB you probably don't need the second SIM, it'll be cheap on the 79c/min SIM.

I checked them out now, they have a 1gb and 5gb. If only they had a 2-3 gb :/. The 1gb is priced well, but not enough data, and then 5gb is R150pm

Looks good. 2gb + 50mins is R120pm. 50mins is way too much, but if I don't find anything better, I'll go with them. Any unused mins for me just feels like wasted money, even if it's just R35

Do you have a rate for the 2gb? Currently I am on Vodacom, but on their 24 months contract, and their 1gb topup costs R109+- depending on promos and such. I paid yesterday R75 for 250mb per day for 30days which is really good.

So 2.5GB is R 155, but for R 999 upfront you can get 2GB/month for 12 months.

MTN BozzaGigs also has a 5GB+5GB option for R 99, which actually lasts 60 days. So that works out at R 50 for 2.5GB. However if you go onto BozzaGigs your call rate is more expensive, I think it goes up to nearly R 2/min. But if you have dual-SIM you can get the best of both worlds.

I'm currently with Vodacom on Month to Month for R170, I get the following:

  • 200 Minutes
  • 10GB Anytime Data
  • 5GB Nightime Data
  • 5GB Video Data
It's way more than I need but for the price it's great and it's worth knowing I always have a good amount of data or minutes if I do find myself in a situation where I need it.

I also get Vodabucks for settling my bill every month and use them to claim vouchers for a free coffee at Kauai every now and then.

What's the name of the package? Or is this one of those secret deals they offer you when you threaten to end your contract?

Between this and the standard bank one so far.
I still think I'm leaning more towards the standard bank one as their out of bundle rates aren't bad, just that I'm getting less than I might use, but it's still half of R120.
Still a far way from August, so if anyone spots a better price, let me know

Have you considered the Telkom Flex On 2gb top up bundle?
Plan Details
  • 2GB Anytime Data
  • 75 All-Net Minutes
  • 500 On-Net Minutes
  • 500 SMS
It's R129 a month.
I have this package and I haven't needed to buy airtime in the past 3 years.
Prepaid itself would be cheaper, but this is cheap enough that I'm happy to pay that much and forget about it.

Depends who your contract is still with, MTN retentions offer a good deal.

I pay R90 a month, 125Min + 25 GB Data

My only other comment is whatever plan you're looking at, go with a mtn/vodacom sim. For e.g. Afrihost uses an mtn sim, and Afrihost is a mobile service provider, not a mobile network. If you go with Telkom/cellC/Virgin/rain etc, i.e. they are a mobile 'network', they get lower priority on mtn/vodacom infrastructure - and signal consequently sux. Cos all mobile infrastructure in SA is mtn/vodacom. IIRC.

Anyone have experience with Rain? Just got 2 sims with their RainOne. Not too bad for an all inclusive once off fee for backup internet. The sims each get 60min + 2Gb data + 100sms (or something)

Hi-Jacking a bit, but I remember back in the day you could just go to a store and buy a prepaid sim for next to nothing, and just load on data and airtime at your own discretion. Is this still possible these days? And more so - is it possible to do this with an eSIM somehow?
It seems all prepaid stuff now still needs ID numbers, bank statements etc.

My main number is so flooded with work stuff - I'd love a separate prepaid eSim on my existing phone without any hassles. This feels like it should be way easier to achieve than it is.

I tried them for a while, it was not great, the call quality and signal were really bad. Sometimes when people phoned me it gave them an error saying my number didn't exist. It was weird.

Yes,
Look at the starter pack before you buy as some are R50 and include data for a week/month.

MTN and Telkom offer prepaid esim. I think Telkom is free (got it last year from the store) .MTN I only converted my contract SIM, might be a charge as my bill increased by a few rands but I idk.

MTN esim will be a new number regardless if you already have a prepaid sim.

Bump. Almost time for me to upgrade. Just checking if someone found something better than the standard bank one before I go with that.
