List of issues with this MacBook:
- The touchpad is a bit stiff to click, but otherwise the trackpad works fine (just don't click it)
- The battery is not great, take it off charge and it doesn't last more than 15min, needs a battery replacement (the battery is removable)
- The AMD discrete graphics card is KAPUT. This is the MacBook pro model that had an overheating graphics card, and sadly the graphics card on this one failed around 2 years ago (read: Some 2011 MacBook Pros Experiencing GPU Glitches, System Crashes). It was eligible for a repair from Apple, however the period of the repair was long gone way before the graphics card on this machine died, so it wasn't eligible for a repair when the time came (nor did I know of the issue until it happened). So the only way the laptop now works is to disable the graphics and to move the AMD kexts to another location. After following the steps from this video (
- Naturally, because of the graphics card being pretty much dead, the thunderbolt port doesn't work (I've tried to connect the laptop to an external display, and nothing).
- The laptop at times does randomly shut down and not switch on again, I have to then leave it for 10/15 min, reset the SMC and then it powers on just fine. It can heat up quite a bit while just doing normal stuff on the PC.
Please let me know if you need more info on the laptop and its issues. If I remember any other issues after opening this thread, I'll update the post.
EDIT:
- Battery health is 33%, 390 charge cycles
