Hi guys.

So for the past 2 years I've been employed by Game Tester. The first as an intern (September 2021 - August 2022) and the second promoted to junior software engineer (Sep 2022 - current).
Prior to this I have been employed by Bytes and TCM for over 8 years collectively, essentially doing all Absa's IT across the northern Free State. I've wanted to become a developer for as long as I can remember, but always found it overwhelming to learn and study with another job taking up the majority of every day, and so I took my shot at Game Tester, dreaming of reaching intermediate - senior level. Unfortunately, Game Tester's new parent company made the call to lay off all juniors with 30 days notice. A bunch of people lost their jobs, me being the youngest and least experienced of the lot, and so I'm really finding it difficult to land a position where someone is willing to give me a chance.

My sole purpose right now, is just to land an opportunity where I can hold onto a career path as a dev. I'd give just about anything, it's what I want to do for the rest of my life. I'll spend every minute of free time I have to learn whatever language I'd need to, if I can just have my dreams and aspirations as a developer back within my grasp. I've been fighting really hard and applying everywhere I could, but most are looking for a bachelors degree which I don't have.

During my 2 years at Game Tester I've gained experience in the following;

- C# back-end using .NET 7 and Rest API
- Angular 6 Framework for Front-End
- Typescript
- Node.js
- HTML & CSS
- MongoDB (least amount of experience)
- GitKraken and Azure DevOps for repositories, branches, pull requests etc.

I'm based in the Free State right now, but can relocate to Cape Town overnight (Have family there) and would do so without a second thought if I could just land a junior position, but I'd need to earn at least 14-15k pm doing so. I hate to sound desperate, but if I do, it's because I am. Getting laid off with 30 days notice fills you with so much shock and anxiety, and aside from getting the bills paid, it felt like my hopes and dreams slipped through my fingers. Can't fall into depression now though, I'm trying my best to stay physically and mentally fit and ready for when the opportunity comes. With that said, please guys, if anyone has, or knows anyone who's willing to take on a junior, I swear you will not find anyone more determined and with a better attitude towards learning and growing until I can become a valued asset.

My honest opinion.

Do the move to CT as soon as able. Even if you have to lodge with family temporarily.

Sign up with a platform like Upwork. Do Freelance work to have some sort of income.

Make projects and add it to an official online portfolio.

Join existing public projects and contribute towards it, even at micro level and reference this in your portfolio as well.

While doing the above, look for a position in CT.

Most companies will not employ you in CT with the 'promise' that you'll relocate. So relocate first and go from there.

Hi,
Would you mind if I passed your info on to my company's admin team?

The drawback would be that it's Sandton based,

reason being is that I know we have quite a few Dev positions open at the moment and we would be able to get you started before the months over if need be

PLEASE do, I'd appreciate it so much. I'll go ahead and PM you my cell, and can forward my CV on whatsapp or email.

Not sure if this is still relevant, only stumbled upon it now. I cannot say how I am associated, but you could potentially apply here:

There is a couple of positions in Cape Town. At the very least you could apply for a "Software Quality Engineer" and potentially work your way up to junior dev. The tech stack is very similar to what you mentioned so your biggest challenge will be the skills test.

I've actually been in touch with them for some time now, but according to them they're really only looking for an intermediate front-end dev right now with at least 2 years more experience that what I've currently got. Still thanks for sharing :)

Hi

Dont know whether you came right, but with your experience, Id also look into Automation testing as well. Do a ISTQB exam if possible.
