It's happening!! 20 hours and counting...

I would say Fallout 3.... Continues on the main story line and yes it's older and the graphics are slightly better in New Vegas. But New Vegas is more of a detour similar to the Assassins Creed franchise.... 1, 2, then brotherhood and there's another just can't remember the name...then 3, black flag, unity, and now the new one.

And I mean who doesn't wanna miss that beautiful... "I don't want to set the world on fire" song ;)

This awesome post on how to HD'ify Fallout 3 looks like it will feed my obsession with HD gfx: Reddit Edit: OMW a few other good ones: Gamingbolt and GamersNexus. Just bought FO3 on Steam for $12 :) cheaper than G2A for the next 23 hours. That doesn't happen often.

Fallout 3 or New Vegas for the franchise newcomers?

FA:3 without a doubt.

New Vegas is definitely better in the graphics department and has a couple extra nice features but 3 was such an incredible storyline (which 4 is very likely a continuation or derivative thereof) it's an essential first play. 1 and 2 were exceptional as well (Brotherhood less so) but I think you'd probably burn yourself out trying to play through 4-5 FA games in a row and the first 2 are pretty hardcore given their age. Rather just read up a FA:3 "refresher" like this: Fallout: New Vegas mega-primer - a brief history of Fallout in two universes | GamesRadar (only read the first 2 pages!)

Nexus will give you a metric shyte-load of mods (and use the Mod Manager, it really does help) and there are a LOT of "best mods" lists out there - be wary of "diluting" the gameplay too much though... stick to lore friendly mods!

A full play through of 3 and NV (I.e. including a lot of side missions) will take somewhere in the region of 80-400 hours depending on how pedantic and "completionist" you are so plan your lack of social life accordingly :p
You can main mission "speed run" both in probably around 20 hours if you just want to get a small taste of the series in preparation for FA:4.

OMF thanks D. Well just bought FO3 on Steam sale. So with the limited time I have there goes my plans to play Dishonoured, Bioshock and Shadow of Mordor before Christmas holidays. FO3 looks ridiculously good with some of the HD mods I've checked out this evening :D

Hahaha... if the game hooks you then you're in for an awesome and very long session! Even if it doesn't hook you at first, give it at least 5-10 hours of slog, when I first started it I almost gave it up because the first hour or so is a bit weird and/or tedious. Push through it and you'll discover an incredible depth of gameplay. Congrats on getting it on sale BTW - nice find! :)

I know I'll love it dude. I prefer immersing myself in one game at a time until I've finished living it and dreaming about it. FO3 appears to be perfect material with the HD mods. I still have a bit to go of TW3. Then it looks like the rest of 2015 has been sold to FO3. Edit: I bought the GOTY on the current Steam sale ($12). The non-GOTY is even cheaper atm (like $6).

I hope FO:4 is gonna be out this year but chances are only the end of 2016 according to infallible internet guesswork... so plenty of time.
GOTY edition is definitely worth the extra dosh - it includes all the DLC which in themselves are all brilliant stories/additions.

Yeah stoked to play FO 4, looks like the same good old franchise, and was rumoured for December, so that means probably Q2 or Q3 of 2016 [emoji14]. Guess I'll play 3, and NV again ^ ^

Guys who are looking to start off somewhere in the series, as DarrynB said, best place is Fallout 3. Give it an hour (I won't give away spoilers but get to your first "town" and then the gameplay world explodes in size and scope). Yes, the gfx in F:NV are slightly better, but head over to the Nexus (click for awesome) and you will be met with thousands and thousands of awesome mods, from HD texture packs to player bases and added weapons, it's all there.

Recommended mods before you even start playing:

Fallout Mod Manager <-- This is an essential imho, Just a UI to install and sort mods and manage your game
FOSE (Fallout Script Extender) <-- Essential for most mods to work (Like Ironsights and Weapon mods)
NMC's Texture packs
RH_Ironsights
Weapon Mod Kits
Any body replacer of your choice (For me this is pretty much a must have, apparently Bethesda has never seen an actual person up close before)

Just for info sake if you're nervous/new to Fallout mods, the Nexus is THE place to go. So much so that a lot of user generated content and mods actually got included in the FO3 DLCs and New Vegas by Bethesda/Obsidian.

Bought fallout 3 for ps3, first 15 minutes was so boring, left it for dead..

probably give it another shot

I would venture to say that had you played another 15 mins, it would have turned into 40 hours [emoji13]

I would have to agree, fallout is a game you really just need to take a day off work, get tons of snacks, sit down and have a fun 5 hour session, then you will thoroughly enjoy it ^ ^. Great story, funny moments, wondeful game play :)
