HI.. so my friend bought an import iphone 5 b4 it came out in sa last year.. but now when she goes to major cities jhb/dbn the network crashes meaning it refuses to connect to a network unless she restarts the phone. than it connects but as soon as she puts the phone away for about 5 minutes it than looses network again. the ultimate solution is having it shipped back to usa for a fix unless one of you smart carboniters can offer another solution. its a black iphone5 16gb, can someone point out a rough sales amount for the phone with this problem?

Thanks guys

Have you tried loading different sims on it? Which carrier is she with now? Try using 3G only and not edge or vice versa. They recommend it here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18870801#18870801

Which iOS version is she using? Try getting the latest update.

On AnandTech there is a diagram of where the antenna sits for 4s that is the same for 5 (battery takes up most room and the layout is the same except for new connector and headphone jack at bottom), AnandTech | Apple iPhone 4S: Thoroughly Reviewed. There are really good diagrams on there as well from ifixit.

So either the feedback cable is moved a bit or the connector is dusty or water damaged or something. You could take it to iPhone Repairs, Mac Repair, iPad Repair - macworks.co.za which is in Fourways or any iphone repair shop there is one in Benmore Gardens as well but MacWorks fixed my iPhone button within an hour and they charged me 400 rand. They would either find replacment parts for it or just tinker a bit and realign those components or blow the dust out or something.

I wouldn't suggest diy because assembling and disassembling the iphone is hectic, there is flimsy cable connector that connects the button to the screen and its the last component and its easy to mess up. Here is a dissembly video:How to disassemble the iPhone 4 and put it back together again in another color - YouTube

Awe wait which network version of the iphone did she get and which ios system did she restore or upgrade from? Because there are CDMA and GSM versions of the iphone. The network towers here support GSM if she got CDMA then its bad. Check here to identify if its CDMA or GSM: How to Determine if iPhone is GSM or CDMA also for reference: CDMA vs GSM - Difference and Comparison | Diffen

So its not a phone fault but the version of the phone she got. She should try to sell it and get a local phone which the towers support.

You could also jailbreak it and try one of the cydia apps like: Fix no service after jailbreaking iPhone 4 - YouTube

This guy just does a reset network settings but just for reference pasted it here:

I'd refrain from suggesting the above, pretty sure it constitutes reverse engineering.

Huh? How is that reverse engineering? Are you talking about the cydia app? You can always go back to default iOS. And when is reverse engineering bad?

Jailbreaking an iPhone is not condoned by the manufacturer. It is not like rooting an android. That's the impression I'm under.

Piracy and reverse engineer is against carb rules. If I remember correctly.

it does void warranty but you can always set it back to default os, samsung is the only manufacturer that has fuse stuck on the board that bursts or something when the phone is rooted. i wasnt telling the op to root their phone and pirate but to use a tweak to ensure that any carrier can be used or GSM or CDMA which is hard coded or something. Reverse engineering in theory is balls hard and should not be looked down upon. Also piracy? This is a network thread. Also to get pirated apps on cydia is hard and dangerous and already many of those stores are closed down because of user inactivity.

jailbreaking is the same as rooting. explain how it isnt?

Android is open source and ios is not.

lol i asked "how" is it different. jailbreaking is rooting the iphone to get to system level folders to make changes to os that is why there is soo many customising going on.

Besides the actual process, it is essentially the same thing. Why buy an apple product in the first place then? All android phones have mostly accessible system access. Rooting an android is more for customisation, roms etc. Jailbreaking an iPhone is to access the system they didn't want you to access in the first place hence reverse engineering the retail software.

Please stop derailing thread and no, it's unlocking and editing config and adding additional widgets without recompiling os source files and essentially creating a new ios which by using existing code. To reverse engineer ios code would have to decompile compiled source and edit and recompile. Just google reverse engineering.

Hey m05am no problem. Was checking out this vid today iPhone 5s Defect: Sent a BRAND NEW ONE - YouTube and the reviewer had a defective iPhone 5S model which would drop network signal or just continue searching for a network. Apple would need to replace it. Try contacting Apple Core at Sandton 011 535 9000, 1 Sandton Drive. You mentioned it was bought overseas but just try them maybe they can sort it out.
