Huawei Smartphones Will Lose Google Android Software And Services, Reports Claim

I really hope Sony manages to capitalise locally. Don't want to go Samsung at the end of the year.

Hey guys so I kind of have buyers remorse now. Got the P30 lite on Saturday over the A50, now I wonder if MTN would accept a return? Is it worth a shot? Is the CPA my friend here or is this just an act of god type scenario, just have to swallow this pill.

Look at ZTE, they were also banned and then made an agreement (US accepted money...).

Same will happen with Huawei if you ask me, Huawei is just a pawn in Trump's trade war. Though ultimately the US will suffer in the long run, as nobody wants to do business with a company that can be manipulated by some man child that throws tantrums.

It's just hysteria for the purpose of negotiations, but it's a huge hit on the US image of ethics and leadership.

does it have Android 9 pie at least ..... if yes then it should be good enough to last a year or two without needing the updates - while the updates are nice to have they are not always necessary and EMUI is a decent enough launcher to allow you a fair amount of customisation

IMHO nowadays most android phones are a much of a muchness ie one is as good as the other and it will only make a huge difference of the newer version of android has lots of changes but i reckon Android Q is largely going to be a non-event in terms of being revolutionary so most people will be able to use their phones with the firmware that it already has and you wont lose out on much

this all depends on you having purchased the phone for reasons of sanity rather than vanity ie if all you wnated was the latest shiny toy then i'm sure you will actually replace it sooner rather than later anyway ..... having said that though those A50s are excellent as well and if they do accept the return then i say go for it but do not be scared if they do not accept it back since the P30 lite should be good enough to do everything you need done for a year or three .... just my 2c

Yeah I agree with you. I mean there is always roms, which will surely come out for this phone though it has a Kirin SOC, so could take a while. I am actually more disappointed with the camera on this thing. On the gsm arena comparison tool it seemed quite capable, but then it was on a tripod. In real life the camera is pretty meh to be honest. SOMETIMES it takes great shots but the consistency is off. I would rather have consistently slightly worse shots than one moment it looks like a photo was taken with a DSLR, the next it looks like a washed out oil painting. I think this has something to do with the depth sensor, could probably get better results in manual mode.

Another thing is that someone has ported the google camera to the p30 lite, but not the variant we get in SA. Here we get the 24mp P30 lite, but there is a 48mp variant with pixel binning and 6gb ram.

dont be too keen on pixel binning since it is still merely interpolation and doesnt give you too many real life improvements in actuality - but yep i would be keen on a ported version of G Cam since im using a version of it ported for Xiaomi phones on my Poco F1 and its brilliant ..... especially the night mode shots

the shots you talk about that look like a washed out oil painting are probably low light shots so im sure eventually you will get that ported G Cam app for your phones camera that will benefit from G Cams excellent night mode .... but you will still have to alternate between G Cam and your stock app since there are still minor problems with most of the ported versions for example the version i have freezes if you try to use it as a video camera but the stock app in my phone now allows me to do even 4k @ 60 FPS so between the two apps i can get pretty good results

having said everything i just went into a cell C store with a buddy who was deciding between the same two handsets for his upgrade ie the P30 Lite and the A50 and i would go for the A50 between those two anyway because it has a Super Amoled screen instead of an IPS LCD ..... the rest of it is all a much of a muchness

I just read an article last week that Sony is slowly pulling out of SA with their mobile division, sort of like what they did with their Bravia TV`s :(

I mean it's to be understood with how they've been getting eked out over the last 2 years by consumer choice as people flock to Huawei and Samsung.....but now that Huawei is facing a decline they should be able to win that market share back to how things were 2-4 years ago. What a pity.

in the cellphone department their phones have been meh. They need to go back to the drawing board but its good they doing that. Same thing happened with lenovo/motorola phones.

Their flagships have been great but they've completely failed to deliver competent lower offerings, they're always below spec VS the competition at the same price point. So I partly agree. But I still feel they're the nicest droids, the Z3 was awesome, to this date my favourite phone I've had.

I've never been Huawei's biggest fan but they made the local smartphone market so much more competitive than it was. Even if they lose a huge market share I think it will be taken up by someone else with fairly competitive pricing instead of Samsung and Apple. Glad I have a Xiaomi though...

I have a OnePlus and I do that to all iPhone, Samsung and Huwaei users. Hope nothing happens to OP.

Wouldn't it be amazing if OnePlus devices became part of the SP line-up in SA after this. Xaomei as well I suppose although I'm sure people will be cautious of them as well given they sound even more Chinese than Whahwey.

but Xiaomi are coming up with some awesome phones .... have you seen the specs of the upcoming Redmi K20 pro - absolutely amazing for its price - its higher spec than many top of the range models from other manufacturers despite featuring a Snapdragon 855 chipset (the pro version not the vanilla version which only features a snapdragon 730) and its going to be around $400

so if Xiaomi actually do officially come to SA they are going to give the other manufacturers a lot to think about IMHO ..... no matter how Chinese the name sounds

Just for reference I only mentioned the Chinese thing because if that were not suddenly a factor this thread would not exist. So with reduced services or the worry that they may experience reduced services they've got a little bit of an uphill battle, or again Huawei would simply be able to maintain it's spot.

Oh my fuck....they're completely hosed at the moment. This is so much worse that the title suggests.

Huawei cannot retain its spot anywhere because with no Google they cannot use the Play store with their phones so no apps are going to work with any Huawei phones soon enough ..... besides for the obvious no updates so there will be no retention of any spot by Huawei

other companies like Xiaomi already gave the China based Roms and have already been working with no Google for a while in China itself and they already have their own Chines only app store .... besides I don't think they will be banned from doing Business with the Americans because they don't rock the boat in terms of who they sell sensitive hardware to

Huawei's troubles definitely do mean that their Chinese based counterparts and Rivals will be able to one up them eventually

They can use Aptotide

No idea how good they are. Im keen to get a 2nd phone and test them out.

Front companies

China can use this in their trade war to counter the ban on huawei - Rare Earth Materials

huawei vs cisco Unfortunately no real details came out of this case.

I'm keen to see what huawei's alternative os is as we do need more competition in this space for os's that use apk's so that adoption of said new os would be quicker.

I'm guessing America and China will come to an agreement like with the previous one.

Looks cool it seems if you stick to verified apps you'll know they don't have viruses. Saw a Pokémon rumble rush game there. 😄

Yeah you can also get apps from APK Mirror i think the issue with these guys you would have to update manually as the app store normally manages your updates.

Ill try the two above sooner or later just trying to find a replacement for google maps.

if you read again, it says that they are still suspended until it is found okay to unsuspend them .... but as it stands they are still (temporarily i would assume) suspended
ah my bad xD

look .... i like Huawei phones, and i applaud their efforts here, but they should have waited a while - theres so much bad news for them right now that any good that they do is going to seem like a token act, and is not going to counteract that feeling of being shortcharged - if they had waited a couple of months and let the hoo-ha die out and then started a new trend of good news as far as they are concerned it would have been better for them

right now they cannot stem the tide and things like this are just going to pass unnoticed because people are still going to be scared to buy any Huawei item in the fear that its still going to lose all aftersales support no matter what happens ...... to me right now anything they try to do is just "pissing in the wind" and only they are going to get wet ...... timing is everything and IMHO they should just let the tide sweep them away until they reach shallower ground where its going to be easier to recover instead of trying to struggle at where the tide is strongest in the deep end

That's nice.

It's better than nothing. Especially those that have older devices about 2 years old, which would have been out of the product life cycle in any event.
