I need advise from the network admins here please. My setup at home is as follows:

Connectivity : 10mb uncapped ADSL (only runs at 6mb)
Connection type : Netgear N300 Wireless ADSL Modem Router DGN2200
Connected devices: 3 PCs, 3 cell phones, a few tablets, all connected via WiFi, not using static IPs
Usage : Some Netflix, some Supersport streaming, downloading and gaming

Issue : YouTube being streamed by the laaitie (on the pc in his room) kills all other activities on the network. It obviously affects the latency, hence gaming pings spike you right off the server and it also degrades Netflix and SS streaming to either being unwatchable or into buffering every 30 seconds.

What I want to do, is to limit or prioritise traffic on the network. YouTube will always hog all available bandwidth to do its thing and I'm so sick of it, I want to scream. Short of sticking the USB wifi dongle up his ass, I need a solution here please. Kids being kids, asking not to stream when other people are awake, is soon forgotten and apparently it's VERY entertaining to watch countless videos of other people playing CS:GO

I have limited to no knowledge of traffic on networks, so I need some suggestions here please. I doubt it's possible to do this on the router, so I need you to please advise and preferably do so in terms that's easy to follow.
I'd like to restrict only YouTube traffic to the point where it will stream, but not at the expense of other protocols on the network.

If I need to set up a network server top do this, please advise what will be a cheap easy option (since it's only for home use) or if there is software available to do this.

Thanks

Asus dsl router is cheapest easiest option. Has builtin qos or speed limiting per MAC address. So you can lock his wireless card to a mbps or 2

^this. I also use an Asus router, but I've never had to use the QOS stuff yet (touch wood), because I've never been kicked out of a game because of latency spikes, but I do monitor traffic when things are running a bit slow

I am not aware of a way to limit per protocol or type of use.
I am only aware of entirely limiting the speed of a specific MAC address/enforced IP.
So if you do this you will have to limit all speed to the offending system instead.
On my TP-Link WiFi router this process is so easy though that one can toggle as needed though.
Just wanted to make you aware that you may severely cripple his system use on a permanent basis if you do not toggle as needed.

I don't know if the laaitie is using Chrome or is the kind of skelm that would circumvent this, but if you hit F12 in Chrome for the developer tab, under the Network tab there's a drop down that says "No Throttling". You can change that to one of a number of presets, or create your own.

Download the setup manual from here:

Your router supports QoS and I'm 99% sure you can drop the priority of Youtube on it specifically so all other protocols etc won't be affected, or setup QoS per MAC address and it will limit all the kid's network traffic.

Don't forget to change the router password to something your kid can't guess ;)

Thanks guys, will definitely look at these options.
My only real concern is YouTube sucking the life out of the line. Surely you don't need much bandwidth to play BF / CSGO / OVERWATCH, so if I limit it to say 2mb, I'm sure the rest shouldn't suffer.
I'll try the above suggestion, if I can't get it right, I'll have a look at the ASUS.

Thanks !

Just a question on these routers with the removable antennas, if you put the bigger ones on, does it actually boost the strength of the signal ?

They do work, but differently to what you would expect.
The energy that the router transmits is fixed. Adding a different antenna changes the shape of the radiation pattern.
Here is a good primer:

Nice, I like the balloon analogy.

To directly answer Gelmir's question: Yes, but like the flattening balloon, only if the receiver is on the same height as the sender, if it is substantially "off plane" then the signal will actually weaken (assuming you keep the antennas straight up).

Thanks eleventh and WiZard, it makes a lot of sense.

I learn something new every day!

Tried setting it up with the Netgear, but it's useless. At no point can I specify a specific application, name or address that I want to restrict. I can set the priority on a specific MAC address, but it affects ALL traffic, not just a specific application.
I've ordered the ASUS from Takealot, will try to set that up once it arrives

You can try setting the wireless mode to 54Mbps... got the same router and this helps when I want to stream together with my two daughters on their tabs...
