Probably not the best place to ask but hoping someone at MTN is lurking here.

So my mom got a sms last month with a otp for a new contract on her account. She ignored it because they need the otp..right?

A few days later another sms stating the contract is being finalized so she calls fraud dept. immediately. They "block" the new number and ask for affidavit stating the new contract is fraudulent which is sent to them.

The latest invoice is now the original R229 plus the fraudulent content totaling to just under R3k. MTN says she must go to a branch and change to cash payment method and just not pay the fraudulent amount. The branch can do nothing because her fingerprints doesn't work for authentication so it seems the account has basically been hijacked. The branch send her to the bank to block the payment, FNB says they can't block only reverse it. Her income is all cash so she will just make sure there isnt enough cash for payment to go through.

Any suggestions?

wtf, change bank completely. They have her number :ROFLMAO:

It's incredible how much MTN fraud is popping up these days.

The fact that apparently MTN can't do anything is ridiculous, why send her to a branch to change to cash in the first place. can't the fraud dept sort this over the phone?

What a pos business.

Yeah sounds like a clown show.

I worked at MTN for a while. They issued me with a 3G card and SIM. I stored the unopened SIM packet in a drawer. The next month, I had a bill of R4k for calls that they claimed I had made to non-MTN numbers.

Never in my life will I subscribe to MTN's service. I'd rather use carrier pigeon.

Just an update. The fraudster has made his number primary so all otp is going to the fraudulent number. MTN can still do nothing.

Bank account change incoming and the old MTN number is being abandoned.
