Are they both not planar?

Fostex makes a lot of planars but as far as I know those are normal.

Edit: As far as I know Massdrop's only planar is the 4XX

I want to agree, I really do... but there is just something personal and "tactile" about listening to headphones. It's a different experience.
Listening to beautiful, detailed music produced by proper stereo setup... Bliss! There is something a bout a room filled with music that headphones cannot replicate for me.

True, and I don't disagree, I guess what I'm trying to say is that for me there isn't one is better than the other. I enjoy headphones for what they are and I enjoy speakers for what they are and I enjoy a live concert for what it is :p

I also prefer swinging live. :3

I don't enjoy rap or hiphop nearly enough to warrant an evening out.

As soon as I get my fancy headies back I'll come and chat about audio quality and the like here.

Hey dude! Sorry for this thread moving at this rate. But it is the only place for us to discuss audio on the forum where a few members are actually active.

To answer your question, there is no best. The general consensus here seems to be that any half-decent open back headset would give you better gaming performance.

A few points to note though; if you mention that your g930 is lacking oomf what exactly do you mean? Loudness, clarity, bass, detail? What do you require in the oomf department?
Your onboard dac/amp should be alright. Not decent or good, but useable. If you do not plan on buying a soundcard or external dac/amp, make sure whatever you buy are easy enough to drive with your motherboard.

What do you need from your headphone? Personally I am not a fan of the mx50, but many swear by its performance. It is just way to bassy for my palette and there is no soundstage to be found.

I was actually looking at Arctis Pro + DAC. Seeing that it is a very nice looking pair. But then this thread started and got me digging. Now I am not sure.

What I meant by oomf is actually very vague and broad. So let me try to explain. In some cases I feel that the sound is not loud enough. In other cases other sounds are too loud. To give an example, when I play Escape from tarkov, then I sometimes feel that the softer sounds are not loud enough. Then When I play Overwatch or APEX then certain sharper sounds are too loud. And I just can't stand the stereo sound on those headsets. It has to have 7.1 enabled. I am not sure what is classified as good sound but when I listen to music, it sounds better for me with 7.1 on. It might be that I am just too used to 7.1 but the sound stage sounds different/better than without 7.1 enabled.

What I want in a headset is to have the low rustle of a bush to be clearly audible/louder and to be able to have good directional sound. If the Arctis Pro + DAC can deliver on that then that is all I want. But then the constant thing nags at the back of my mind... is there something better?

I like wireless, but due to the quality I will be open to have a proper headset. The DT-770 looks like a very good pair based on what you all talk about. Then I need to buy a proper DAC and of course a Mic. So is the inconvenience worth the quality and price of just having an all in one gaming headset?

Hey gays, i have an AKGs 270 mkii now, and want to upgrade them but i dont know if i should save up for the HD600 or get a beyerdynamic DT990, i like my AKGs they sound really good, the mids and highs are really nice, the bass is dont know if im using the word correctly but its tight maybe punch, even with heavy bassy songs, i listen to mostly 80s music cause of the beats and sounds, also like listening to orchestra music. so which should i go for?

I've now had the pleasure of listening to this on some JVC SZ2000...
If you're into bass heavy music, then these are pretty much the holy grail. I want them so badly but eh can't justify spending that kind of money... 😢

Oh, that's easy. DT990s for the 80s beats and HD600s for the orchestra stuff. But that's just me :p

Jokes aside you're going to have to listen to them to make a choice. Haven't AB tested the DT990s vs the HD600s but from what I remember:

DT990s are V shaped, HD600 are more flat/analytical.
DT990s have a wider soundstage but HD600 probably have better imaging/seperation (I find this is a common trade-off with a few exceptions of course)
Clarity is tough to call. Maybe HD600s would win but I don't know.

What amp do you have? DT990s might be harder to drive (well, that depends, some report the sensitivity of the HD600s as 97 dB others as 100 dB and apparently it changed at some point...)

Hi there,

Having followed the thread and been overwhelmed by the info. What would a decent upgrade be from my current headphones the Sennheiser HD 518 + on board audio? Mainly used for gaming and music (All over the place).

I’ve been looking into the Massdrop 6xx and an amp + DAC to pair with it. Would that be a worthwhile step up? Or what other options are there worth looking in to?

Thanks

From my super limited knowledge that should be a fantastic step up.
Maybe pair it with a Topping MX3? (from Amazon)

What you are looking for does not exist... All those games have wildly different audio implementations. You will have to adjust your volume accordingly, no matter which headset you are going to end up using. Open back headphones would naturally give you a better a sound stage and imaging, but some prefer closed back still.

Asking if there is something better than a DT770? Definitely!! Is it worth it for what you are chasing, maybe...

If you enjoy your music with 7.1 enabled, and it sounds different with it off, indicate that you enjoy coloured music. If the source does not have a 5.1/7.1 codec, then you are listening to stereo if it is enabled or not. So that 7.1 enabled thing probably applies some EQ on sources with no 5.1/7.1. If I was you I would steer clear of analytical and bright headphones.

Giving a one hit wonder headphone is nearly impossible. Buy the DT770 and be happy with what you have, it's a great headphone. There wil always be something better to compare it with. If you never hear the better phone, you would never know what you are missing.

Hey dude! You are in luck, I've had everything you mention.

If you are fond of the AKG 271 mkii I would advise you to rather opt for the DT990. Soundstage is a bit better, but you lose out on clarity and imaging. HD600 is much clearer than the AKG, but the AKG has a super duper midrange, trade off is that the highs are a bit muted.

I won't recommend an HD600 for gaming. It's too boring.

Have you demo'd a 6XX before? Coming from a HD518, most phones mentioned here is a big stepup...

You can always try something more V-shaped, or with heavier lower end if gaming is your primary use. I personally game with HD58X at the moment, there are a lot of scenes where I wish I was wearing something more fun though.

What does your budget look like? Nuprime uDSD + HD6XX is an amazing setup. And the nuprime will leave a lot of headroom for future headphones and amps.

@panda - 7xx for the dude as a akg upgrade?

Wrong pandela, but YES.

I loved my AKG7XX.... Can't compare them with the 271's. The 271's are built and engineered for in studio use. They are extremely flat, neutral and closed.

The AKG7XX is open, wide af, clear, full, punchy... AND he can power it from his mobo. Then get a dac at a later point if he feels the need.

Why recommend something that punchy from the get-go? Wouldn't something like a MX3 be a better all-in one starter (assuming Desktop use of course).
At least you can stay a bit further away from 400 USD than with the NuPrime.

Unless one often comes by the uDSD cheap here?

No I haven't demo'd one. I have very limited experience with headphones having only used the HD 518, HD 201 and Plantronics Backbeat for reference.

What would you be using as more fun? I haven't decided on my budget as yet, having checked the price of the recommended combo mentioned that would be doable.
