Can you not use HDMI to DVI? They are dirt cheap.

Those cheap ones are terrible.
I bought one like that one from titan-ice for my pc after I got my R9 290 and it was so blurry unless you turn the sharpness on the monitor right up. Got the first one from Matrix computers (about R150) , and took it back. It was so bad that their screens wouldn't pick up the signal. I then paid R300 for one from Incredible connection which looks exactly the same, and it's not quite as bad, but it's nowhere near good.

You'll probably have to get an expensive powered adapter to get a proper signal. I'm going to attempt a conversion on my monitor side.

Save up and get a monitor with full hd and dvi/hdmi, you can get a brand new dell with ips panel from incredible connection for R2k, there might even be cheaper tn panels on takealot.
