Hi all, dont know which section if any this would fall under.

Was recently given a external 3TB HDD that was dropped and stopped working (it makes a tick noise when powering on).
Are there any HDD experts to see if they can fix it for me? Im based in Midrand JHB

FYI

There is no such thing as hard disk repair. The drive is factory sealed with helium or nitrogen gas inside, once you take it apart you can't put it back together again.
If you have critical data on the drive you can send it to a data recovery service (Southbit is great).

Try diskpart through CMD but if it is not looking good in Hard Disk Sentinel then no point in trying

If it was dropped and now clicking it's most likely a problem with the actuator being misaligned. At best you'll be able to pay an arm and a leg to get the data recovered, but getting the drive functional again is probably not feasible. Chances are if the drive was dropped the disk itself, or one of them, is scratched. Had that issue when my father dropped one of my drives and I opened it up for research purposes.

Something like that if you were curious.

It is also possible the hdd is fine and that "enclosure" is dead / damaged

I once saved a Seagate hard drive from ripping it out of the enclosure and putting it in a new one

Damaged enclosures don't go wrrr CLICK. That's a telltale sign of things being lekker ISM. Back in the day I was still working in a pc repair shop I always got to give the message and ask the questions of "hey sir, you know one should do regular OFF disk backups" and listen empathically to their answer before I drop bombs as I seemed to have had the best EQ

The clicking noise is the reader head that moved inside the casing. There is nothing you can do about it now. Running it could scratch the platter inside and cause permanent damage and loss of data. If the data is of such importance that you require it, there are data recovery places in SA, but you looking at about R5k.

thanks, all, its the actual HDD. Data on it is irrelevant. Wanted to see if i could use the drive again. will throw it away thanks.
