I use my personal laptop for work and while at work I can often up up picking my laptop up(on or off) and carrying around. Because I only have an SSD I've never been concerned as to drive damage/wear and tear.

Now i'm looking at adding some storage space to it since my games etc have gotten a little too big and I'd rather not have to plug in an external every time I want to do something.

So now I'm faced with a question, which will be more reliable long term. an HDD or SSD as starage that wont be used every day. so powering down the HDD may be an option if i can possibly keep it off unless I want to access it.

Opinions? advice?

I think you are one of those not busy with long weekend plans or still stuck at the desk lol.

I would replaced the optical drive with bay with those hdd ones, Amazon.com: Protronix SATA Optical Bay 2nd Hard Drive Caddy, Universal for 12.7mm CD / DVD Drive Slot (for SSD and HDD): Computers & Accessories

and then add a 500gb/1tb hybrid drive or ssd. or plain old hdd , cost dependent ofcourse.

I know it may be a bit annoying to have a removable storage but those are handy as you can "never" be sure anything will happen to the laptop, ssd or not

The latter :/

Don't need to replace anything. haha. Because I have an extra bay next to my current drive.(my optical drive doesnt work but who cares nowdays, I'm not going to pay alot of money for weird kits).
Just trying to organize a cable, Then make a caddy out of whats available around me, and after that I'll just slam a second drive in

and then add a 500gb/1tb hybrid drive or ssd. or plain old hdd , cost dependent ofcourse.

Im on the edge about capacity requirements...my 250gb ssd has lasted me two years because Ill only generally keep the games I want to play on it. then move the rest onto my main rig...but between work and games this is becoming an issue. So even adding a 250gb ssd may be enough for now...but in another 2 years it might not be.
But I sure as hell don't want to buy a HDD that's going to only last 2 years because I move my laptop around so much. I'd rather get a ssd and when it gets too full then start siphoning like I do now.
I am one of those people still using drives that are 10 years old(only got rid of them when I didn't need them...they still worked fine) I turn off indexing and keep my ssd at a certain level to extend it's lifetime....even though I know it will more than likely outlive me or become obsolete

Interesting question... Do 2.5" drives last as long as 3.5"?
uhmmm i am gonna say no. too many factors are behind a life span of a drive, i think you will start seeing a difference when you go for enterprise / server drives in terms of life span.

On the drive matter, then get a 512ssd and cable or simply add a 500gb/1th hybrid drive, i think this will be cost effective
