GTX 580, ok to buy? They good in SLI? Wattage?

Hi, 580 sli wont last you 5years, they already old, and most are 1.5gb cards, they will run out of vid mem, the 3gb cards would be vetter, but your better off getting 1 newer card with 3 or 4gb, the hx650 should run 580 sli, although i would get something bigger if you do decide on 580 sli

What would happen say if the 650 were to become too small? If I can get these 2 cards for lets say R1.8k or so, would you say its a good buy for this system? Oh and yes they are 1.5gb, but lookjng at the sli benchmarks they are on par with the gtx780 ti... thats just why I thought it seems good?

Talking from my own personal experience being in this exact situation a while back, the 780ti on it's own may give similar numbers on paper, but in real terms it blows the 2 580's out of the water. I ran 2 Asus DCU2 580's in SLI and then switched to a 780ti.

First, as goliath said, they are 1.5gb, and even when in SLI will still only be 1.5gb. Not each, remember they don't combine, so a total of 1.5gb. Modern 3d applications blow through that pretty quick, and it's only going to get worse. I've already hit the 3gb cap on the 780ti's once or twice. Second, they were made using older architecture, meaning no newer features such as shadowplay are available. Personally I found that they struggled a bit in newer games, especially those that take full advantage of dx11. To get them up to par I had to give them a bit of overclock, which naturally sent the heat and noise up. Third, depending on the brand, I would definitely recommend more than a 650w PSU. The DCU's peaked at around 290w without OC, so for SLI and possibly some OC room I wouldn't go less than 800w.

All in all, upgrading from the 580's to a 780ti was worth every cent to me. The 580 is still a great card, but it makes more sense in the long run to go for a newer 700 or 900 series card imho.

Also had 2 580's. The are good until you want push the res, textures and you run out of vram. 5 years never.

GTX 580 gives the same performance as the GTX 650Ti Boost and slower than a GTX 660.
I don't know how much these go for locally, but they would not only have a much smaller heat and power footprint, they would also provide better performance and more memory. they are at present DX12 enabled as well, in Windows 10 you'll have 4GB of memory in total across the 2 cards.

i7 4790, msi Z97, 16GB RAM?

That's a pretty sweet setup you have there. I don't know if the 580s will do it justice. They are decent cards but 4+ years old already.
In other words I think the 580s will hold you back seeing as your system can run anything you throw at it smoothly. Save up some bucks and get something newer.

Well im getting one gtx580 just so I can game for now... I will definitely be replacing it in the near future. Thanks all
