Hi Peeps

So i need some advice as I do not want to make a mistake when acquiring a new GPU. I have sold my GPU and need another but on my PSU there are 8pin plugs and the cables has 2*6 pins to plug into the GPU. So can I get a GPU that has a 6 and 8pin requirement and then will I only need another cable if this is the case? My PSU is a vantec ion2 plus modular supplu unit. Thanks in advance!

Just get a molex to 8pin adapter. Most of the time you are given these with a new gpu.

Ok thanks man

Nooooo, stay away from molex converters!

As KLEAN_upguy said, most PSU's have 6+2 pin connectors so you can use them as either 6 pin or 8 pin connectors. They look like this:

no just plug the 8 pin and 6 pin in thats why they call it a 6+2 pcie cable

From what I understand, he has only the 6 pin cables (even though the PSU makes provision for 8 pin (6+2) cables).

davyb, the extra 2 pins are both ground pins, so if you need them, get the molex adapters, and only connect those 2 from the molex adapters, while still using the original 6 pin connectors direct from the PSU to supply the +12V (the molex adapter(s) must therefore be 6+2 and not 8 pin).

Ok so I can also get a GPU with 8 pin requirements, that's cool then

See the problem is that psus are rated...firstly make sure you have enough power to handle a 8pin and 6 pin pcie...a common mistake some make is using those molex jacks on psus that are not powerful enough to run a particular gpu .So how much is the rated power, how many amps on 12v rail and what particular gpu you running...8 pin alone can deceiver max up to 150 watt and a 6pin is 75watts...so tdp of your gpu can run well round 225 watts.Lets not forget cpu +o.c...few hardrives and fans to cool. Also some psus are rated over multiple 12v rails so some pcies can run independently on a particular 12v rail.

I have got a vantec ion2+ 800w psu and I now know I will be getting a Asus gtx670 dc-u-ii and it uses 6 pin connectors so it seems no problems there:D

Vantec ? Vantec ION2+ 700-1,000 Watt Power Supply - VAN-700~1,000A - 700~1,000 Watt ATX Power Supply
It left me rather confused adding up that watts for each rail. Vantec stated that 800 watt psu had 4 12v rails
22A 22A 36A 36A respectively together they equal a crazy 116 amps.So in total that's 1392 watts on the 12v rail...so thats a 1500 psu?? Vantec seems to be lieing  i can find a single decent review of this psu.

If it can provide the stated 800watts go for it,and im not saying its a pariculary bad psu you have It's power capabilities seems unknown but i would advise geting your self a more trusted psu unit...depending on your setup a 600-700 psu may even do the trick.

I used to run Gtx460's in SLI on this psu

then do for it 1 gtx 670 draws roughly the same power as 1 gtx 460(gb 256bit version)

When searching on google I see shimmie actually sold one of of these on Carbon in August of 2011:)
